UNION CITY (CBS SF) A six-year old boy was mauled to death by a pit bull at a home in Union City Monday morning, according to Union City police.
Fire crews and an ambulance were called to an address on Elizabeth Way about 11 a.m. Monday morning.
The victim, identified as Dixon resident Nephi Selu, was taken to Stanford Hospital where neighbors of the family say the boy died.
Police said the boy was visiting relatives and had been playing with the dog in the backyard when the dog attacked him, biting him on the top of his head. The boy may have tried to climb onto the animals back, according to police.
The dog was taken to the Tri-City Animal Shelter in Fremont and will be held for a 10-day quarantine, police said.
The dogs owner was distraught but was cooperating with the investigation, police said. The owner told police that the dog has never bitten anyone before.

Union City police say it was simply a terrible accident. They were called to the house on Elizabeth Way yesterday in the middle of the day. Six-year-old Nephi Seiu had been playing with eight other children in the backyard while adult members of the families were inside the home when was he attacked by the family pit bull.
“Somehow during the course of horse play it appears the young man might have tried to ride the dog’s back or, you know, engage in some sort of horse play with the dog and the dog bit him,” Union City Police Department Cmdr. Ben Horner said.
The boy was treated at the scene by eight emergency medical responders and then transported to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Family members said they had the dog for two years. It belonged to an uncle, who is a San Mateo police officer.
A lawyer hired by the department to support the family said the uncle ran outside immediately.
“He removed the dog from the child, without an incident, the dog let loose of the child right away,” Michael Rains said.
Nephi’s aunt said she never saw the dog display any aggressive behavior.
“He played with kids, very obedient, he was never allowed in the house, stayed right at the door, so we never had any problems with him at all, took him around with us, my kids loved him,” Iona Keanaaina said.
The dog, a pit bull mix, was transported to the Tri-City Animal Shelter and is being held for routine 10 day quarantine. Police say the results of their investigation will determine its fate. A preliminary investigation determined that the owner of the dog was in compliance with anti-rabies inoculation and licensing requirements.

Why the h*ll would you go to the bother to quarantine that animal? Cut off its head and look for rabies that way. Good grief.
As often as the stupid drones voting for the libtards. It will take some time.
Ping to Chet99, where ever he may be.
Poor Chet. He took so much flaming here..but he was right.
Not in print. This is stuff I hear from people who’ve owned pit bulls, but I find it believable. Again so long as the fighting dogs were bred properly they were safe for humans to handle, but over 90% of such dogs are now being bred by idiot and ****oles, and the whole breed needs to be deep-sixed and eliminated. You can’t justify the risk to the public on the basis of such a small minority of dogs.
A six year old and a dog should not be alone together, most especially if they are unfamiliar with each other.
People are so foolish, I’ll never get over how stupid they are so often.
I hear the dog’s owner was a cop,,,
Wonder why he didnt shoot his own dog?
