I agree but I still would sort of like to have one. It would be OK to keep in a pickup. I would load it with hot loaded .45 Colt and keep a box of 28 gauge birdshot and one of buckshot.

It might be heavy enough to use .454 Casull ammo without too much recoil but I probably would use something less powerful.

I would like to posit that the pictured firearm is a Taurus Raging Judge Magnum... capable of shooting a 3” magnum .410 shotgun round, a .45 acp round, and the star of the show- the .454 Casull round. Ballistics of the .454 Casull, will give the shooter a chance to fire a 300 grain bullet down range at approximately 1800 feet a second. It’s credited with dropping the top five big game animals of Africa. I bought the snub nose (2 1/2” barrel) only to learn that it is illegal in California, where I planned to carry it on a hike.

When I was about twelve, things were different then; you could bring your rifle or shotgun to school if you were going to hunt after school, anyway, I made a 12 gauge pistol from an old single shot. I carved a great pistol grip and shortened the barrel to about 9 inches. I held it in a tight grip and when I fired it it flew back and knocked the wind out of me. I tried to use a stronger hold and fired it again. Same result. I took it to school and sold to some kid who thought it was neat. That was in the 40's.

You don't want a 10 gauge pistol.

A .45 Cold cartridge would just rattle down the barrel of a 28 gauge and fall out. It’s got a 0.55” bore.

That would be considered a “destructive device” and would require a tax stamp and about six months of paperwork in order to possess. Taurus did show the thing, but backed on plans to manufacturer it . . .for the U.S. market anyway.

I just realized 28 gauge is not the same as .45. What is it?

Is it possibly a .50 caliber? If it is then you could shoot .5oo Smith and Wesson in it. If it is larger than that, I would not want it.

As a somewhat related matter, why are 28 ga slug rounds so rare?

ATF said no. Taurus got away with the Judge because they claim it’s a 45 long colt pistol (with rifling and everything) There isn’t a 28 gauge pistol round for Taurus to claim this is a pistol.

The problem is the stupid GCA 1968, that says that anything rifle or pistol round over .50 caliber has to be approved by the BATF as especially suited to sporting purposes for it to be legal.

Thus, the bureaucracy at the BATFE has an effective veto on technological innovation such as the Taurus revolver.

The chamber diameter for a 28 gauge has to be a little over .60 caliber. We need to simply do away with the who GCA 1968.
