I remember WBAI, aka W “spread the lies” back in college. Everytime I tuned in to really try to listen to the other side they would pre-empt their regular programming to do fundraisers. Ever since the 70’s they’ve been on the brink of perpetual bankruptcy.

A station staffed with counterculture members having trouble meeting accounting requirements? I’m shocked... etc.

Bummer.

I’m sorry to hear this only because on Sunday nights, they air a show called “Everything Old is New Again” that plays Broadway, cabaret and Great American Songbook standards. It’s one of the few radio shows on the air anywhere that plays music I can stand to listen to these days. If they’d just play that 24/7, maybe they’d have listeners and be making money.

A quick glance made me think WNBA players were being laid off.

The background to the problem is a guy named Bernie Madoff. He managed to loot........ well, put it this way, Bernie left the core leftwingtards with nothing!!! http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2319052/posts ~ there were a large number of foundations that were being looted by their leftwingtard management to feed the overgrown cow that supported Pacifica radio. A handful of people at Pacifica were getting all the money, but it wasn’t coming back in the music. WPFW in Washington DC seems to have lost its lease, its record collections AND its broadcasting equipment. Not sure what they’re using now but the power is way down ~ can hardly hear it just 5 miles away.

Aside from the staff members and their families, only the 3 regular listeners of this station will notice.

Looks like they stayed afloat the old fashioned way, by cooking the books.

It’s about time. That station has become a parody of Leftist blather.

Q: How do you make a small fortune with leftist radio?

A: Start with a large one.

On a similar subject I’ve been trying to keep track of leftist radio but in the past few years there’s been very little mention of it anywhere. Even the sites that tracked it are either gone or went inactive.

Had to look up Randi Rhodes, the womyn who was supposed to unseat Rush. Since Clear Channel picked up her show for some unknown reason, she’s on in 19 states but only seven with more than one station, for a total of 32 affiliates.

Me, too. It's coming, I'm sure.

Is there a single so called non profit which is controlled and run by left wingers, which isn’t a money laundering collection basket for those liberals?

Since the news of Madoff and his clones came out, Liz and I have bet his fleecing of his liberal buddies would eliminate many so called non profits, like this one.

WBAI was the station who aired the George Carlin “seven dirty words” bit that sparked controversy. Recently three of its personalities passed on—two of them were hosts of a monthly self-help, build-your-esteem show who committed suicide...

I have argued for years that NPR/public radio stations should be allowed to sell advertising. Let them compete in the free market (of course, stations that CAN sell advertising would then have competition for their ad buys) and they should keep their hands OUT of our wallets (taxpayer money for CPB).

(Air America flopped because it couldn’t compete commercially with the liberal network we already had—NPR.) Also even though public radio is allegedly non-commercial they run donorships that sound like ads and get donations from various companies....one online list of NPR
“donors” included everything from Angie’s list to car companies to movie studios to “Fox Broadcasting Company”.

Yet the likes of WBAI can’t compete financially even with all this. (I’ll add some public radio studios, like that of WGBH Boston, are outfitted like the Taj Mahal. Big spenders...)

ABSOLUTAMENTE!

With Madoff in charge the leftwingtards didn't have to husband resources, nor even pay much attention to proper money management for the trusts backing their captive organizations.

This is just one of many.

There seem to be fewer and fewer of these “progressive talk” (commercial) stations. Even in liberal Boston—none (save for NPR, allegedly non-commercial):

—2004, Clear Channel puts prog talk on 1200/1430. Al Franken was in town on election night to host the party for “President Kerry”. Google “Kerry party turns to tears,
bitterness” report from CNS News Service.

—2006, CC takes it off due to poor ratings and earnings

—Later a man named Jeff Santos buys time on AM 1510, including local and national shows. It too flops and now he can boast of one hour on stations with microscopic signals.
To the best of my knowledge in all of New England the only all prog talk stations are one in Brattleboro VT, and one in Bangor ME (owned by Stephen King).

Cons talk has taken its lumps lately too, but even in liberal Boston _commercial_ lefty talk other than NPR
is just about non-existant, wonder why.

These people were too far left for Obama and his big financial supporters so they go bye bye. I would listen occasionally in NY or DC and they criticized Obama fairly frequently mostly with the same blather they made about Bush (warmonger, etc). I sorta like the medical part of what Dr. Gary Null says, but he mixed it with a lot of leftist blather. I also listened to a couple of marxist black guys and thus was better able to understand how Obama thinks even though he won’t come out and say what they say on the radio.
