It was a lose-lose situation for an Austin man.

He ran his bicycle into the side of a trailer on an Austin street, and he faces charges for it.

It happened at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday in the 1700 block of East Oakland Avenue.

Police say the 40-year-old man failed to stop at a stop sign, and ran his bike into the side of a trailer being pulled by an Austin Utilities truck.

The bicyclist was knocked to the street on impact, and suffered bumps and abrasions.

He was taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment.

Investigators also say the man appeared to be intoxicated.

He’ll be sent a citation for “careless driving”, and the county attorney will review whether to charge him with drunk driving.

If he's riding his bike drunk, can he qualify for the tax subsidy for ethanol-powered vehicles?

‘appeared to be intoxicated”

Tut tut! It’s spring, your Honor! Mr. Bodine is a young man.
A holistic doctor had merely dosed him with a medicinal tonic for ‘buck fever.’
Tonic. Liquor. ‘Lightning.’ Whatever. His gray-haired granny ....
Call it what you will. I’ll keep talking until I’ve earned my fee.

This past Tuesday I rode a bike for the first time in 18 years.

I fell down four times while trying to stop. Thank God the cops didn’t show up and arrest me.

No, I wasn’t drunk, but my legs weren’t strong enough to keep me from falling over!

I’m still hurting from that excursion today.

I still remember deciding to ride a bike to work for the 1st time in about 20 years. Arose at 0400, out the driveway by 0430, with the steepest part of the ride being downhill for the first 2 blocks in a residential subdivision when nobody was awake, and as I was coasting through the 1st intersection, a sportscar pulled up quickly on my right to a stop. I slammed on my bicycle brakes, but had forgotten not to use both brakes simultaneously, and went head over heals over the front of the bike onto the asphalt with a nice road rash and embedded chunks of aggregate in my forearms. I drove to work that morning and bought a headlight, then began again the next day with less turmoil.

That’s nothing. I was riding my bike at night once, and went over a speed bump. Instinctively I clamped the front wheel brake at the same time my rear wheel hit the speed bump. The effect was to basically slap me face-first into the pavement. For the next month following that my face resembled a combination style pizza.

Running through stop signs and driving drunk without citation (there are publicized “pub crawls” on bicycles and other “drink and ride” events). Sounds like typical bicyclist behavior I have observed.

They want to be treated with the same rights as someone in an automobile but they don’t want to observe the laws, respect the other drivers (or pedestrians), or pay license taxes to support pavement upkeep.
