Every Dog Has It's Special Day
Ft Huachuca SCOUT ^

Posted on 06/23/2013 7:07:41 AM PDT by SandRat

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, our four-legged canine friends can often soothe the soul and put a smile on one’s face.

In response to the U.S. Army Fort Huachuca Facebook request, the Fort Huachuca community has shared their favorite furry Family member stories for the public to enjoy.

The top three entries that were chosen are:

Jennifer Kowalk McClanahan

“When we got our first dog 13 years ago, my husband said, ‘No dogs on the bed.’ That lasted less than a week. Laddy now sleeps with us on a pillow. Five years later, we got a second dog and my husband said, ‘Two dogs are not going to sleep in our bed.’ Brody now sleeps between us at our feet. (We had to get a king size bed to fit all of us.) We recently got a third dog and my husband said, ‘This one sleeps in his kennel.’ The second night the new dog was home, my husband got up at 10 p.m. to let Toby out of his kennel and you guessed it … three dogs in our bed.”

Robin Gero

“The only good story I have for the fort is that my nephew and his Family were heading to Japan and their dog, Claude, had to be left behind because of the restrictions. A really good Family took him in. When they got to Japan, they adopted a Soldier’s dog when the man was sent somewhere else. Here’s to the Soldier’s pets!”

Stacy Sandlin

“As the proud parent of Szarik, a retired K-9 from here at Fort Huachuca, there are quite a few interesting stories about living with an 82-pound retired K-9. It was interesting to integrate him into a home with another dog and two cats. Gracie, the Lhasa Apso, is the alerter and Szarik is the enforcer. He is 100 percent retired, has his own love seat in the living room and has made friends with Toby the cat. I think that when Szarik walks up and licks Toby on the nose, he is being friendly, but then again, maybe he is just tasting him. But after seven years of service, he has earned the right to drool on the cat every now and then!”

A special thanks to those who submitted your stories! The Public Affairs staff enjoyed reading them!

Be sure to remember that today is “Take Your Dog to Work Day” so use extra caution while driving on post.

You can’t have unequal treatment of the dogs. If one dog sleeps on the bed, then all of them get to do it. The dogs have their dominance order, but it’s not up to the owners to treat them unequally.

No dogs on our bed—unless someone leaves a door ajar downstairs, and they sneak in.

Maxx(Rottie) slept at our feet and as a puppy it was no problem, two years and 120lbs later, well... at least he slept on the wife's side of the bed

he finally got his own bed

My 85 lb. pitador (1/2 Black Lb and 1/2 some kind if Pit) has slept on my bed since i adopted him at about 9 weeks of age. H always tries to take over more than half the bed. I’ve sine added a Great Dane (about 110 lb.). All three of us just on’t fit in the same bed. The Dane sleeps on the living room couch. When the pitador finally passes, the Dane will probably end up on the bed.

I think I am too hot for the bassets, although they have snugged off an on for years with me. I keep a huge dog bed and recliner in the room; that seems to appease them. One of them sleeps on my son’s bed. He is so spoiled he actually gets his head on a pillow.

But, the chihuahua is another story. 100 degree weather and he is curled up on me or beside me. Winter requires an additional heat source.

He is very aware of my movements. But, I have also learned to reach for him as I move.

I had to put my foot down when the Golden Retriever wanted to join the two Shih Tzus and my other mutt on the bed. It wasn’t so much his size, but all that shedding hair!

One Tzu Shih used to sleep mostly on my pillow. She’s passed now, -lived to ripe old age of almost 20.

The hilarious thing about describing dog sleeping to those who are not fans of our "feathered friends" i the look of uncomprehending horror it sometimes evokes. After all, how could anyone actually enjoy such a disgusting and degraded practice, especially when dogs are well known to be "filthy animals with disgusting personal habits."

Worst of all, children are sometimes allowed to engage in it. A couple of months ago I attended a conference at a hotel where dogs were allowed. One of the dogs was a totally charming 140 lb. 2 year old female Great Dane. One of the somewhat awestruck guests who observed the animal asked her human parents, "Where do you keep her?' Their charming 16 year old daughter replied, "She sleeps with me in a twin bed."
