Vanity: Just got my 2011 audit letter, I owe them. (Standard deductions, not even itemizing)
IRS | Me

Posted on 06/27/2013 9:44:54 AM PDT by autumnraine

So in my 22 years of filing taxes, just got my audit letter from 2011, I owe $500. Not a lot, but considering I make less than $30,000 grand a year since the financial collapse... I find it odd that with standard children deductions I got audited.

Why would the IRS target someone who made less than $15,000 for that year? Seriously???

Make more now, but not that year. But they bother to audit me?

I don’t know this, but if your income that year was significantly lower than previous years, I wonder if that sent up a red flag?

Not saying it’s fair or smart....just possible.

Is it an audit letter or a Notice CP2000 where they indicate something is incorrect &/or missing from your return? Was there some income you missed reporting?

Your maximum tax liability for income of $15,000 with the standard deduction and two personal exemptions should be around $100...

What is the basis for their claim?

that is probably what triggered it, if it is a number uusually low or high compared to what your normal trending has been. and if you normally itemize and that year you didn’t that’s another profile anomaly.

This is how they have us. They have us all. They’ve made themselves (the entire government) so damn big and so opaque that calling them to account, they who should be accountable, nearly impossible and always daunting.

Here is the deal. Every government agency, some even at the state level are on a mission to jack every dollar of income from the taxpayers they can get away with. Keep in mind, 50% of the nation pay no federal income tax and these parasites are demanding more blood. I have noticed a large increase in traffic stops in my immediate area. All of these measures are to generate income by taking money from the workers and achievers. It is only going to get worse.

I have a read that the IRS only audits about 1.5% of returns AND you are more likely to be audited at lower income than higher income people.

This is because Obama lowered the tax deduction amounts last year, but did not lower the amount OWED.

So, everyone thought they were getting more money back.

In reality, they still had to pay the same amount, they just didnt take out as much from your paychecks, and so you ended up short at the end of the year.

I am surprised this didn’t happen to a lot more people.

Wait, what? I cheated? No, my biggest issue was not keeping a paper trail on the work I did for a local small business. Trying to decide if it’s work the effort to go back to the state I lived in then (and had lived there for my entire life) or just pay them.

Cost vs gain (other than a big FU) will probably mean I will pay them. In installments.

And thanks for accusing me of being a cheat and/or crook.

YES!!! I got my 1099, but the business went bankrupt. Then the tax place decided that I made less than I made. As I said, I can try and get records of payments made (which sometimes was in cash, and gave a receipt for... which has mysteriously disappeared... and that’s where the issue is I believe) or just pay it.

I moved out of state since then (two years ago) and God only knows where those receipts are.

My fault, I admit it. But dang.

By “tax place”, I mean the accounting firm that worked for the business I worked for. Seems they found a way to include less income on the bet that I couldn’t find my receipts.

They bet right.
