Start page says that it is “enhanced by google”.

I've mostly switched from Google to StartPage.

This description is provided on StartPage.com:

Startpage offers you Web search results from Google in complete privacy!

When you search with Startpage, we remove all identifying information from your query and submit it anonymously to Google ourselves. We get the results and return them to you in total privacy.

Your IP address is never recorded, your visit is not logged, and no tracking cookies are placed on your browser. When it comes to protecting your privacy, Startpage runs the tightest ship on the Internet. Our outstanding privacy policy and thoughtful engineering give you great search results in total anonymity. Here are some of our key features:

Free proxy surfing available.
Praised by privacy experts worldwide.
Fourteen-year company track record.
Third-party certified.

No IP address recorded.
No record is made of your searches.
No identifying or tracking cookies used.
Connection using powerful SSL encryption.

To learn more, check out our privacy page and read our privacy policy. We're confident you'll like what you see.

Thanks very much for all the excellent input, Freepers. Right now I’m using searchnu.com, just to avoid Google. It’s not the best search engine, actually kinda shoddy, but at least it ain’t Google.

Have a question. How do I add a Facebook Toolbar to my computer?

All of which means squat if you post comments on a conservative web site. Or anywhere for that matter if your post contains the forbidden words.

Everyone here is in the cross hairs already. Be less concerned about search engines and more concerned about what you are going to do when “they” decide to come for you. Be it an IRS audit (financial ruin) or jackboots pounding on your door, they are eventually going to retaliate against all contrary political thought.

I noticed something else; maybe this deserves its own thread, but I don’t know how to set that up:

Jonestown Massacre...a subject of recent interest of mine since it looks like the country is headed in a direction like that.

Search ‘Jonestown massacre’ on youtube to find documentary videos produced by many all over the world.

But...some 90s BS folksinger whatever decided to rename himself ‘Brian Jonestown Massacre’ (no BS that is supposedly the name of this musical group).

So to find info on Jonestown you have to wade through all this crap. What kind of sick fu## would call a band that; without some other motivation.

duckduckgo.com

Have a friend who did some work for them. They store no info so even if they get a subpoena they have nothing to give up.

IxQuick may actually be better, I don't know. Basically I love Google except for its privacy invasions, so StartPage gives me most of what I want.

While I cannot be sure that Ixquick/Startpage will follow its stated privacy policy, I think it is likely.

Nope. Rely on your own intellect and you’ll be fine.

Almost always, all the liberal propaganda comes right to the top.

Just like shit, it floats.

It is an encrypted, private connection into a network. If you work from home, you use a VPN to connect to the corporate network, and while you are connected, any connections to the internet, etc., come out of the corporate network, not directly from you. It protects the company and you, and is just like you were “on the site” connected directly to the internal corporate network.

A private VPN is an encrypted private connection into the vendor’s network. So, when you are connected to the private VPN, you connect to a particular VPN server, and then all the connections you make to the internet (web, email, etc.) will look as if they are coming from the VPN company’s network, and not from your computer or ISP. Any traffic is encrypted from the VPN company to your machine. It also “hides” your IP address, as it is an IP address assigned by the VPN company (it is one of theirs) and your IP address from your ISP is not seen by any connections.

Most of the private VPN companies do not record your incoming IP address, and don’t log anything related to you personally, as they take your money to keep things private. Additionally, if you choose an off-shore company, they don’t fall under the jurisdiction of US laws, etc.

So, if you do like I do (I rotate VPN servers that I log into on a daily/weekly basis) your connections into the internet will look as if the are coming from, say, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, etc. The main limitation is speed (some locations are not as quick as others, although it is still fast); and on websites that use source IP addresses to “determine” your location and tailor the web pages to what they think your location is (i.e. time zones, temperature presentation [Centigrade versus Celsius on weather websites], etc.) will not be what they “should” be.

Costs are generally about 10$ per month, and several allow many selections of servers to log into, both in the US, and in other countries all over the world.

It just helps preserve/keep anonymity of IP addresses and traffic. Combined with encrypted, good search engines, and prudent practices protecting your ID on the web, it adds several additional layers of protection for you.

Thank you for your informative and helpful post. One can always count on FReepers for an answer. I’m going to look into it.
