Going to D.C. for Fourth of July - What Should We See?
Self ^ | 6/29/2013 | USConservative

Taking the family to Washington DC for the Fourth of July. We'll be there starting July 2nd through 5th. Staying 2 blocks from White House. (No, I won't say anything remotely smart-ass/smart-alecky here.)

I want to see the following:

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington National Cemetery. #1 on my list is to pay my respects to those who've made the ultimate sacrifice for our Country.

#2 The National Archives where our Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Bill of Rights and the 1297 version of the Magna Carta are all stored.

#3 Lincoln Memorial

#4 Vietnam Veterans Memorial. (Family served in that war, they thankfully came home.)

Of course we're going to see the Fireworks on the Mall on the 4th of July, see the Washington Memorial (not open), Library of Congress.

What else should we take our two teenage sons to see?

Staying at the AKA Watergate, two blocks from the White House. Hopefully, Barry isn't in town. He's the last person/thing I'd want to see.

Hey, any Freepers on DC over the Fourth?

Correction: We’re staying at the AKA WhiteHouse. (No idea why I typed “Watergate.”)

Used to live there. The fireworks are just the best.

My FAVORITE thing though is the Air & Space museum. They’ve also opened an annex for that at Dulles but did so after I moved away.

Have fun!!!

Good choices all. The Korean War Memorial is every bit as haunting as the Viet Nam Wall, particularly if you get there on a foggy morning.

Of the Smithsonians, the National Aerospace is excellent as are the Natural History Museum and National Gallery of Art.

We’re planning on walking the Mall sometime on the 3rd, so I assume (?) we’ll see everything on the Mall?

Maybe you want to add the Watergate to your itinerary?

On the fourth of July, the National Archive is supposed to do a live reading of the Constitution in period clothing. Anyone know about this event? We’ve heard about it, but don’t know what time it is ... can anyone help?

If you want an experience you’ll never forget, just take a roll on the Whitehouse grass.

The only one you mentioned not currently on our list is the Korean War memorial. Is that on the Mall?

I live in the Chicago area. Well versed in heat and humidity that’ll rip the gizzards out of ya! Lake Michigan is one big-ass humidifier!

"we’ll see everything on the Mall?"

There's a lot of stuff there for just one day.

If you've got wheels, Mt. Vernon is quite interesting. The Naval Academy in Annapolis is also worth a trip.

You spend more than a day just walking up and down the mall look at various smaller museums. The Smithsonian Renwick Gallery was good. I thought the modern art gallery was a waste. The aerospace is a little ways out of town and there is more than enough on the mall to fill your time. I also liked the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
