Apple Scores $30 Million iPad Contract from L.A. Unified School District

Though Microsoft has been making a strong push to disrupt Apple's foothold in the education market by offering K–12 schools its Surface tablets at the low price of $199, its pricing incentives didn't have an effect on the Los Angeles Unified School District, reports AllThingsD.

On Tuesday night, the school board voted to spend $30 million dollars on Apple iPads, which will see the company equipping every student in 47 of the district's schools with a tablet.

The deal, which was approved in a 6–0 vote by the district's school board, will see Apple supplying about 35,000 iPads to 47 LAUSD schools at a cost of about $678 per device. That's higher than retail, but I'm told the devices are to be preloaded with an assortment of educational software prior to distribution — an additional expense. They also come with a three-year warranty.

According to the LA Times, the district did test runs with multiple devices and the iPad "received the highest scoring by the students and the teachers." Winning a contract with the Los Angeles Unified School District is a major boon for Apple, as the district is the second largest school system in the United States and could influence other districts to follow in its footsteps.

Apple has long had a heavy focus on the educational market, which ramped up with the introduction of the iPad in 2010. Apple offers discounts across its product lineup for students and earlier this year, it was reported that the company had sold more than 8 million iPads to educational institutions around the world.

In February, Apple also met with the Turkish President to further discuss another huge educational deal that would see the country purchasing more than $4.5 billion worth of Apple products.

Okay, let me get this straight. I have read of late that the Los Angeles Unified School District is short of funds for basic programs, but they are going to spend this kind of money on computers? For what? They already have computers in most of their schools.

Oops, I meant "tablets". For what purpose? So the welfare kids can take them home and do homework? As if...more likely they'll use them for social networking. What a waste of your parents' tax dollars.

Maybe the next Trayvon Martin can say "Unlimited Nigga" instead of what he posted "No_Limit_Nigga".

You folks who think I'm a racist, Google Trayvon Martin + nigga and see what you get. That was his handle, not mine. Deal with the racist little punk. If you claim I'm a racist for even showing you the way, then I say you are the bigot.

Personally, I don't give a crap what color your skin is. Be white, brown, black, red, yellow, green, purple, almost forgot blue. If you look at me through the prism of color, then you are THE racist as we're starting to learn. You're really pissing off a lot of good people who long ago got over the race thing.

Sorry to get off on a separate tangent, but this nonsense of providing school kids with free tablets is just another step in the failing of the Los Angeles School District, which is broke.

How thugs use technology: thug tech.

Emphasis on:

E-mail scams, viewing porn on school and library computers, thug life celebration on social media (e.g. Facebook), using "smart phones" to coordinate flash mobs and criminal activity.

Someone should write a paper on it if they haven't already.

"Someone should write a paper on it if they haven't already."

And what college/university professor would accept such a thesis?

"Higher ed" might not touch it. Wired Magazine might consider it non-PC. I think it's interesting that with all the opportunities high tech promises to people, the thugs and lowlifes turn it toward base desires and criminal activity.

Teachers Unions. One of the most powerful in CA. They routinely spend money they don’t have.

Do the tablets get to go home with the kids? They are so easy to break and destroy. We had one fall down the stairs and crack and another one had something hot set on it and ruined the screen. They weren’t the super, duper expensive ones, but still. These things will not be taken care of and appreciated because it’s “free”. It’s expected. When they get destroyed or “lost” or stolen, will they be replaced? These people are absolute morons.

And the kids still won’t know squat. Plus, with cursive writing out of the curriculum they won’t even be able to sign their names but for some kind of chicken scratch.

There is some serious new math going on here. The district has 650,000 students. They claim with 3 buys of $30 million, every student (and teacher) will have their own ipad.

The math doesn't add up. Even if you round down, $500 per ipad times 650,000 students is roughly $325 million-

It will be a fiasco, but should we expect anything else from Public education. These IPADS will be stolen, broken, supposedly stolen > drug purchases...... what really needs to be determined is whom on the determining School board is a major Apple stock holder.

A vast majority of the Parents / Foster Parents of these students cant afford a $600 IPAD, so you know damn well the policy has been written that they will have no responsibility when these devices go missing. Let the Taxpayer pillage begin.
