AMMO!!
Vanity

Posted on 07/05/2013 9:07:59 AM PDT by Doctor 2Brains

Can somebody please give me the latest scoop on buying ammo? Somebody around here always has good info.

Just after Newtown, I went to the Nation's Gun Show in Chantilly, VA and got 4,000 round of 9mm and .45. By the way, don't blame me as a "panic buyer;" for the past 8 years, that's been my usual buy at the NGS. Prics were up by only 1 penny per round, and there was ammo to be had. Now, I'm down to my last 65 rounds, and I'm beginning to freak. The prices at DAG Ammo actually DROPPED last week, but they are COMPLETELY out of stock.

What can a desperate man do?

Thanks

Depends on what you load, when I started, I loaded 45 acp for about $4 per box of 50 and store price was about $15.

Can’t tell you exactly how much it would cost to reload now as price and availability of components are changing day be day.

“Walmart had plenty of 9mm? My wife’s been going for weeks, and it’s always ZERO. Zero 9mm and zero .45. He says the truck comes in and every round is gone within the hour.”

Yep, they had quite a bit - but all of one kind - and it was not any brand I recoginized. It was a foreign manufacturer. I did not make note of the name. The boxes were orange and black. Looked like good quality stuff (maybe Swiss manufacturer?). There has not been any Winchester white box available for a long time, nor did they have any .45, .40, .38Spc, or .380.

I agree. I’d sooner shoot an airgun or my crossbow before completely diminishing any caliber I have.

"....even my local wholesaler, Widener’s, cannot get .40 and .45ACP...

You probably can't get .45 ACP ammunition because it hasn't been manufactured since prior to World War II.

Is your pistol chambered for the obsolete .45 ACP cartridge and so marked on the pistol?

Many folks mistakenly believe that the .45 ACP, .45 Auto and Cartridge .45 Ball Model 1911 are the same cartridge. They are not. Each is loaded to comply with entirely different Technical Data Packages and tested for chamber pressure using different equipment and procedures. The data produced is not interchangeable between the different systems and the pressure limits are not the same.

Every box of ammunition loaded by SAAMI members or other responsible manufacturers incorporates some form of the warning, "Use this ammunition only in firearms chambered and designated (roll stamped on the barrel, slide or frame) for this specific cartridge". In layman terms, that means the cartridge headstamp and firearm roll stamp must be the same to ensure safety.

To paraphrase James Carville, "It's the headstamp stupid".

My walmart had 8 cases of .40 this morning with a price of $36 a box of 100. Had plenty of 9mm. They said they haven't had any 22LR for two weeks. They also had 3 AR15s in the display cabinet, two of them were Colts.

The only 22s I have ever had serious problems with were Russian “Junior” steel-cased 22s. Dirty, jamming, horrible.

Why would you allow yourself to get down to 65 rounds?

yer nutz.

I have a base supply in all calibers and extras for gun calibers I don’t own...

Your posting name is interesting as well as disturbing. That terminology is typically used by folks with little understanding of guns and ammunition.

There has never been a cartridge with that designation. Nor has there ever been a .45 Short Colt or .45 Medium Colt. Wannabe gun nuts thrive on renaming cartridges for reasons unknown to educated folks.

I suppose their next effort will be to rename the .454 Casull the .45 Extra Long Colt and the .460 S&W the .45 Extremely Long Colt.

That same bunch was uncertain whether to rename the 45 GAP the 45 Short ACP or the .45 Short Auto.

There are specific safety related reasons concerning proper cartridge designations and abbreviations. SAAMI establishes formal cartridge designations and nobody else has the authority to change them. Period.

45 Colt costs about 78 cents a round (when you can find it). I can reload it for about 16 cents a round. 62 cents in savings every time you pull the trigger. Multiply that by thousands and you are talking real money.

[...and they haven’t had any .22lr for months!”

Was just in my local gun shop, (Cleveland, OH), they had Blazer ammo all over the place, .38, .40, 9MM and.45. Also 5.56, and a ton of shotgun shells/slugs.

Most importantly, they had bricks of Remington Thunder Bolt .22LR for $37.00 per brick, (one brick per customer.)

Additionally, they had the small 50 round boxes of Federal, Remington and Winchester .22LR, (Limit 100 rounds per customer). Cost between $4.99 and $10.99 depending on what you grab.

Still no CCI Velocitor or Stingers though. These are my preferred rounds.

I’ve been going daily for a week now!

I prefer the Velocitors in my SR22. Down to about 500 rounds, so I’m not practicing with it. Using Winchester or Federal bulkpack. Haven’t fired a round of 5.56 in months now. Not a single 45ACP has been used in months and the 7.62 x 25 I have isn’t getting any M57 exercise, either.
