A DNR warden got this 2012 photo of a Wisconsin black bear in the northwoods.
DULUTH, Minn. - Part of a national park in northwestern Wisconsin having problems with increased bear activity could be closed for as long as two weeks.
Apostle Islands National Lakeshore officials had to close Sand Island on Wednesday after a bear entered campsites and even a beached boat. No one has been hurt.
Superintendent Bob Krumenaker said they are hoping the closure conditions the bear to look for natural food sources instead of human food.
Krumenaker told the Duluth News Tribune they've had to close other islands because of bear activity in the past and a couple times reopened too soon and the bears returned.
He said it could be a week or two before Sand Island reopens.
If he's not back, his relatives will. Free food is tempting.
I recall reading about the scavengers who ate a horse that fell off a cliff.
The naturalist studying the area reported that the various critters; a fox, some coyotes, a badger and a couple bear revisited the site at about the same time of year for multiple years hoping to find another fall victim.
I don’t think a two week break is going to discourage the bears...
Will that work to deter people seeking food stamps?
Cull the bears, raise some money; two birds, one stone.
So at the end of the 2 weeks are the bears going to disneyworld or something? Or will they be getting EBT cards.
Rather than a fee, they’d have better luck with the problem by offering bountys on the bears....

What happened to the good old days when parents threw their kids in the car and everyone drove to the dump to watch the bears go through the trash at night with their headlights on?

This just proves that bears can be re-educated faster than a low information EBT carrier.
all my kids, now it their 40s & 50’s have fond memories of cars lined up at the dump waiting for the bears to arrive. Reminded me of a drive-in movie, the cars were lined up perfectly....one jerk let his kids out of the car when the dump had about 7 bears in it....upper penisular of Michigan is lousy with bears....and every little town had its own dump.. :O). We visited several...

Yep, We did it in northern WI when we were on vacation.
Sure, but you can’t shoot the bear for walking through your campground or climbing in your fishing boat. Had one climb in a beached fishing boat once, quite entertaining watching him dealing with the side to side motion.

Sounds like Van Riper State Park in the 60’s.
Spent many and evening while camping there in the summer driving down to the park dump and watching the bears after dark.
Can’t say for sure. I was a very small kid. I don’t think it was anything as fancy as a state park though. Just one of many small town dumps.
