As has been said, back in the 60s the rioting was contained in the black neighborhoods. Same thing happened after the King verdict in the 90s. I don’t remember rioters heading into BelAir or Holmby Hills. Will that change? Not likely.
I was in DC the day MLK was killed, and the rioting started not too very far from where I worked, but far enough away. All the businesses closed down and the town was pretty much evacuated. At the time I lived in Arlington VA, across the bridge from DC. We watched the smoke rising throughout the city from my balcony.
The following Monday we returned to work and I cannot tell you how creepy it was. My bus went across Key Bridge into Georgetown; parked at the “T” at the end of the bridge was an Army bank. Walking M Street (Georgetown’s main drag) were pairs of fully armed soldiers. I’d never lived through anything like that before, even tho I remember seeing news clips of riots in Harlem when I lived in NY.
With the post-MLK assassination riots in DC, again, it was contained in the then-all black neighborhoods. The rioters didn’t get into Woodley Park or Kalorama or other upscale white neighborhoods that are geographically not far from black neighborhoods. However, in 2013, DC is far more white than it was in 1968. Neighborhoods that were black then are mixed now, with lots of young white professionals coming and gentrifying them.
I DO have concerns about a son who lives in Richmond in a mixed neighborhood. I don’t like the thought that he could be a victim by being in the wrong place at the wrong time when SHTF.
i was 9 years old during the 1967 Detroit Riot...lived on the far west side. Everybody in the neighborhood was quite scared...some left town til it was over. They blamed the Detroit Police as the main reason for the unrest. They had a undercover unit called S.T.R.E.S.S..”STOP THE ROBBERIES..ENJOY SAFE STREETS. Also had a unit nicknamed the “BIG FOUR’..4 man plainclothes cars,,,and..they were bad asses....no doubt about it. But i see a much more similar brew stirring that caused alot of the unrest simmering today. The 60’s riots were mostly in the latter part of the decade, well into Lyndon Johnson’s failed “NEW SOCIETY” policies...promising things that simply could never be accomplished. Sound familiar today?..People actually believed the Obama non-sense....now its a failed vision..a promise broken. Also with the Supreme Courts voting act rollback..social media connecting everyone..this could get real ugly.
I could have used a DC map like that ten years ago. Ended up in some store where everyone was black and they were giving me looks. Took me three tries to get a cashier that didn’t walk away when I got to the checkout.
I took it three ways. 1) To be more careful of where I went, 2) racism is still alive, and 3) perhaps a bit of what it was like to be black 60 years ago.
The Great Society legislation, brought to us by Lyndon Johnson (the Son Of Satan) and Patrick Daniel Moynihan, the original Guilty White Liberal from New York who felt that the 25% out-of-wedlock birth rate in the black community at the time was unacceptable. What they brought in replaced Daddy with a welfare check and doomed entire generations of black people to perpetual dependence on government to "do" for them. Think about the people in the Superdome after Katrina and Rachel Jeantel.
And why is Lyndon Johnson the Son Of Satan? The Great Society Legislation (find his quote about "those N-words are going to vote Democrat for 100 years now"), and the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, which led to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. Nobody died as a result of Watergate, but that was an enormous scandal. Gulf of Tonkin, just another day in Democrat politics as practiced by Lyndon Johnson.
I was 11 years old living in a small town about 150 miles from Detroit and remember all the men cleaning and loading their long guns.
It was reassuring to a youngster.
This was in the days when our news was sporadic and subject to the rumor mill.
I do remember marveling at the fact that the rioters burned down their own neighborhoods.
Seemed kinda stupid to me.
I wonder if history will repeat itself if George Zimmerman is acquitted?
I date the beginning of the decline of American civilization to 1965 for a "perfect storm" of reasons:
* The Baby Boom ended in 1964. Then Americans stopped having babies. An "era of bad feelings" began to set in.
* The civil rights movement ceased being a righteous cause after 1964.
* The Gulf of Tonkin resolution came in 1965 and the start of the Vietnam War.
* The Great Society began in 1965.
* Mainline churches started to decline in 1965.
* The sexual revolution was starting to take off.
* The drug culture was starting to take off.
* The end of clean, wholesome popular movies.
* There began to take hold a distrust of traditional authorities all across the board, on all levels of society.
For the double whammy of Vietnam and the Great Society, I have always regarded LBJ as the worst American president. But Obama is making a real run for his crown.

Obama is much worse than LBJ. And LBJ was a first class bastard.

There you have it, it all started in 1965 because I did it, and would do it again!

The Kerner Commission Report detailed not only how severe some of the more significant riots were, but what it took to restore order.
If you watch video of the riots/looting after the Rodney King Verdict, you will see what appear to be scouts probing ahead of the crowd, breaking select storefronts, and moving on. Then the looters go in. I think the entire thing was as much about 'free stuff' as protest, if not more so, and I think there were very organized looting teams (gangs?) moving through in the vanguard of the rioters.
I remember the 68 Democratic Convention and police clubbing the students over the head in Grant Park. Meanwhile Daley had all the Black gang leaders and trouble makers rounded up and sent on a Caribbean Cruise. You never saw one Black rioting during those riots.
Cities burning are not fun.
The Communist "New Left" was behind much of the agitation in the Black community, too. It isn't the first time racial agitation has been tried on these shores, but it was more effective. The current round of victim mongering and double standards will lead to worse if widespread violence erupts.
While some of the majority demographic group will be caught flatfooted, far more are more ready than ever for something to start, and I think they will finish it.
That only works if they follow the old model. With the crimes of the current administration out there for all to see, and the presumed sympathy of federal LEOS and other forces for the aggrieved, things might not follow the same paradigm. Have a plan, just in case, scope out your neighborhood and see where the strong/weak points are, what can be defended and what cannot, and where the choke points are, just in case.
No race riots in the Mississippi town I grew up in during the ‘60’s. People just lived, pretty much respected each other, all races.
no ultraviolent video games and violent rap music to fuel the anger and hatred, in the 60s.
The Glenville riot in Cleveland had armed snipers shooting from upper storey windows. It took a National Guard M60 tank at a key intersection to restore order. I don’t know just how “civilized” you think that might be.
I lived near by. Plainfield was such a beautiful city. It is a shame what happened to it.
