Rescuers on Monday reached five men trapped in trees by several Sumatran tigers for five days after the angry animals mauled a sixth man to death, police said.

First Lt. Surya Purba said three tamers managed to drive the tigers away before the men who were in weak condition were evacuated from trees in the protected Mount Leuser National Park in Tamiang, an Aceh district neighbouring with North Sumatra province.

The men were looking for rare agarwood — used to make incense and perfume — and accidentally caught a tiger cub in a trap they were using to catch deer for food, said district police chief Lt. Col. Dicky Sondani.

Just read a story that they were expected to be treed for at least another 4 days.

Shouldn't have killed the tiger cub. Mama tigers are worse that mama bears when it comes to their babies.

According to the article in Daily Mail, the guy was not mauled to death, he was torn apart and eaten.

Well I'm glad to hear the tigers were being responsible hunters and not just killing for sport.

They had all four five guys treed. Could have gone up for a snack any time they wanted.

Those guys are damn lucky to be alive.

The guys killed a tiger cub, I don't think they were so much hungry as pissed off.

Article says the guy who was mauled to death had climbed the tree, but the branch broke, causing him to fall to the ground, where he was pounced upon by the tigers. Terrible way to die.

While a tiger can climb tree’s they rarely do as they get older they just get too big and heavy.

It surely would have been a rather quick way to go. Excited tigers are strong and fast. Consider the genius kids who taunted the tiger in SF a couple of years ago and enticed it to spring at them.

I didnt see that the cub was killed—only trapped. But it depends on the type of trap.

Where does it say they “killed” the cub?

“accidentally caught a tiger cub in a trap they were using to catch deer for food”

Where these poachers?

If they were, I would not care if tigers ate all of them.

Tigers can’t climb trees? Black bears can!
