Growing up, I remember the neighbor's cat would sit in wait for hours waiting for a gopher or the like to poke its head up from a hole.
Certainly safer, save for cat transmitted schizophrenia, than mixing fire and a gas line.

If the gopher had chewed through a gas line somehow, it would as quickly asphyxiated. So I suspect the rocket scientist decided to use his own explosive gas.
Importantly, they sell propane-oxygen gopher explosive gas systems.
