The government is expanding the ways airline passengers can enroll in an expedited screening program that allows travelers to leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belts and keep laptop computers in cases at security checkpoints. …

On Friday, TSA Administrator John Pistole said beginning later this year, U.S. citizens will be able to enroll online or visit an enrollment site to provide identification, fingerprints and an $85 enrollment fee.

I quit flying commercially in 1992, when things started getting stupid.

I'm not doing it again until they let me smoke and carry a handgun.

Interesting. So the same people who dictate the groping are the ones that will get $85 if they agree not to grope you. No conflict of interest there.

provide identification, fingerprints and an $85 enrollment fee. …

And just WHY wouldn't our passports - which have all that - suffice?

I already don't have to take my shoes off - 'cause I'm a great gramma - and I have a 'travel set' of clothes with no metal - no belts, no grommets.

But damned if I'll pay another fee for another document that covers what I already have - and paid for.

I wonder which politician owns the company that will provide THIS service?

I appreciate their effort to streamline the mess at the airport. But my docs don’t want me irradiated and I don’t wanna be groped (being too old for fun and games like that). Would this new ID card assure immunity from these objectionable procedures? (Or only let you keep your laptop in its little suitcare, but you’re still subject to groping and radiation, or? One recent program of this type DID leave you subject to groping and radiation...)

“it is extortion they already have everyones profile courtesy of the nsa”

exactly! They ALREADY have the fingerprints! It’s the same BS with the NEXUS program between US & CDA. You need to surrender every frigging ID between both countries you have to use that specific toll.

Please, expand everywhere! I travel a fair amount, including out of the country, and I HATE having to semi-disrobe and go barefoot through a checkpoint (particularly since I have heard from people in the biz that virtually nobody is ever caught this way).

I think the whole thing should be dropped and we should go to Israeli-style profiling, that is, recent travels - been to visit AQ recently? - and anything else from the copious information they have about us. But of course, if it makes Muslims look bad, we couldn’t possibly do this.

For me $85 would be cheap to buy my way out of this tedious harassment. I have to take off all my jewelry (which tells you it’s not gold!) and half the time I misplace it and it turns up in the toe of whatever shoe I had on. After I get back from the trip, of course.

Here’s an idea that would speed it up even more. Check only those who look like Islamoterrorists. It might sound like profiling but it would save Americans a lot of time and money.

Looks like an “effort” to extort money from passengers, to me.
