Daycare Teacher Fired After Extinguishing Fire At Center

When Michelle Hammack,a teacher at the Little Temples Childcare facility in Arlington, Fla., smelled smoke and the children were napping, she rushed out of her classroom to investigate.

Seeing that chicken nuggets were burning in an oven, she was able to put out the fire before even the fire trucks arrived on the scene, according to a report by WTEV-TV in Jacksonville. Her boss, however, wasn't impressed. On that same day, the owner of the childcare facility Olga Rozhaov fired Hammack.

Rozhakov defended her decision to the media. "I fired her only because she left her room," she told the TV station. "It's not acceptable, and if anybody else does the same thing, I will fire again. I will fire them. No question."

Hammack, for her part, is taking credit for keeping the kids safe. The fire "probably would have progressed had it not been put out before [the fire trucks arrived]," she told WTEV-TV. She was also able to march her students out of the building to safety. And so, she says, she's being mistreated. "I didn't start the fire. I put it out." She's protested her firing outside the school. Parents have yet to make a comment to the media about her story.

Libs ran out of animal and plant species to protect, so now flames are endangered.

Looks like she did the right thing

She responded to an emergency thinking about her students' safety and not "what's the rule". She did the correct thing, and should accept being fired with pride.

Why would she or anyone else want to work for a boss who put the rules before the safety of children, anyway?

In my adventures of teaching, I've never heard of a teacher getting anything but praise if acting on their own kept children safe.

What they need to do is pass a law making schools " No Fire Extinguisher" zones so that they never have to face this danger again.

If removing a safety apparatus from schools saves even one life, isn't it worth it?

Which makes me think the boss is the one who left the nuggets in the oven.

Didn't think of that. Regardless, if I had kids there, I would immediately pull them out because of this owner's action that punished someone who very well may have saved my child's life.

Maybe soem parents will get the same idea, making this business another one deserving to die. The marketplace can be brutal at times.

Really? You watched your children every minute that they slept and napped, and never ever once left that room?

Olga sounds like a moron and a power-freak; withdraw all the children from this school.

A good point - I wonder who DID leave them there?

Someone should ask the demented Olga - if you are in a building, any building, and you smell smoke or burning, isn’t it NORMAL and RESPONSIBLE to investigate? Are the children all going to die if the teacher leaves the room for a couple of minutes? Isn’t leaving children alone in a room by themselves for a few minutes a normal part of everyday life? Must all parents sleep in the same room as their pre-school children?

The boss may be a complete moron, but, on the other hand, she may face even worse penalties if something happens to one of the little darlings when the caretaker is out of the room.

Could just be a case of dueling government regulations.

how do such morons get to be in charge of schools and other businesses? Is stupidity a requirement or something?

Don’t have any kids and have never (yet) been responsible for watching one for more than a few minutes. But I can certainly see where some might believe it’s a bad idea to leave x-number of young kids alone, asleep, to go off and do something that might render you unable to perform your primary duty of getting them out of harms way.

Where I work our first priority is to make sure everyone is out or leaving, then, maybe, attempt to fight the fire.
