When Michelle Hammack,a teacher at the Little Temples Childcare facility in Arlington, Fla., smelled smoke and the children were napping, she rushed out of her classroom to investigate.
Seeing that chicken nuggets were burning in an oven, she was able to put out the fire before even the fire trucks arrived on the scene, according to a report by WTEV-TV in Jacksonville. Her boss, however, wasn't impressed. On that same day, the owner of the childcare facility Olga Rozhaov fired Hammack.
Rozhakov defended her decision to the media. "I fired her only because she left her room," she told the TV station. "It's not acceptable, and if anybody else does the same thing, I will fire again. I will fire them. No question."
Hammack, for her part, is taking credit for keeping the kids safe. The fire "probably would have progressed had it not been put out before [the fire trucks arrived]," she told WTEV-TV. She was also able to march her students out of the building to safety. And so, she says, she's being mistreated. "I didn't start the fire. I put it out." She's protested her firing outside the school. Parents have yet to make a comment to the media about her story.

How long before lefties push to ban fire extinguishers?
It looks to me like they are applying the same logic here as they do with “you don’t need a gun, call 911”.
There must be reasonable exceptions to an otherwise reaonable rule.
“...and the children were napping...”
I think I see a problem right there.
The whole culture of “Zero Tolerance” and “Loss of Common Sense” and “Lawyers will sue anything that Moves or looks at them wrong” is what contributes to this sort of crap...
Another zero-tolerance idiot. There's a job for her in the public schools somewhere.
“”I fired her only because she left her room,”
How will a charred corpse be an affective teacher?
How long before lefties push to ban fire extinguishers?
Taking way union fire fighters jobs , obvously the day care is pro-union !
They HAVE to enforce zero tolerance.
To do otherwise is to make a discretionary decision and possibly be held civilly liable for any consequence of that decision.
Now, this wasn’t the case before lawyers outnumbered doctors.
Lots of Russian mafia in Florida. Just saying.
Yeah .. well ... you made us give you back Z, but we’re gonn’a get ONE of you MFers !
She should have fired the moron who left the oven to burn.
So, as soon as the chicken nuggets caught fire, her job was forfeit, no matter what she did or did not do. Had she stayed in the room she would have been fired for not dealing with the problem while she could have. She was fired because her boss was embarrassed that the thing happened at all and somedamnbody had to get fired!
“She was also able to march her students out of the building to safety.”
Looks like she did the right thing.
This sounds like bureaucratic grooved thinking at its worst. America’s ed schools seem to be doing a wonderful job of indoctrinating the common sense out of our nation’s educators.
Deal with it.
Which makes me think the boss is the one who left the nuggets in the oven.
Ha ha! Anyway, I guess the teacher was just supposed to march the children out and let the place burn until the FD got there, huh?
“It’s a daycare. Children that age nap.
Deal with it.”
That’s just it. She left the children (unattended?) asleep, to go fight a fire.
This is a common practice, especially with big nation wide chains. My wife is the director of one of those centers and has been forced on a couple occasions to fire long term excellent employees for non life threatening lapses in judgement. When the bean counters, who see a lawsuit around every corner are setting policy, these kinds of things are bound to happen.
