Cowboys Owner: At Least 1 NFL Team Could Come To LA

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Could the city of Los Angeles be getting at least one NFL team?

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones apparently thinks so: he told reporters at the Cowboys training camp in Oxnard last weekend that the league’s return to L.A. is “closer than ever,” according to NFL.com.

Jones, a California native, said a move for at least one NFL team could be “imminent.”

“It’s more imminent than any time since we haven’t had a team in Los Angeles,” Jones told NFL.com. “And yes, this market is a huge market. It’s a little bit of a black eye for all of us to have had this many years and not had an NFL team in Los Angeles.”

While he wouldn’t speculate on any potential teams that may be considering the move, Jones downplayed the possibility of league expansion.

“There won’t be any expansion, so it will be teams that move,” he said.

CBS2 Sports Director Jim Hill reported last month that league sources believe former Dodgers owner Frank McCourt’s involvement with any deal could hinder efforts to bring back pro football to the city.

Agreed. I’m an Eagles fan.
I knew a bunch of Steelers fans. They relocated to Jax for CSX.

All three Florida teams are basically in the bottom third of the NFL in terms of home game attendance. So why have three NFL teams that draw so poorly bunched together in one relatively small state?
I'm speaking as a long time Denver Bronco season ticket holder that attends games that routinely have 76,000 plus fans in attendance ...
By the way we like Jack Del Rio our defensive coordinator, good to have him back for his second year with the Broncos.

First of all, Florida is not that small a state in land area. In total area it is 22nd. Note, NY with three teams, is 26th.

You are correct indirectly about one thing, pro football is not a big deal in Fla probably as there have been few great seasons for any of these teams in the past 20 years. The Jax area is not very large population wise either. My guess around a million...hard draw as college football is the main attraction here. Here are the numbers computed by someone else:

NFL Cities by Population

(in millions)
:NYJ :NYG New York 19.0
:CHI Chicago 9.6
:DAL Dallas 6.3
:PHI Philadelphia 5.8
:HOU Houston 5.7
:MIA Miami 5.4
:ATL Atlanta 5.4
:WAS Washington D.C. 5.4
:NE Boston 4.5
:DET Detroit 4.4
:ARI Phoenix 4.3
:SF :OAK San Francisco/Oakland 4.3
:SEA Seattle 3.3
:MIN Minneapolis 3.2
:SD San Diego 3.0
:STL St. Louis 2.8
:TB Tampa Bay 2.7
:BAL Baltimore 2.7
:DEN Denver 2.5
:PIT Pittsburgh 2.4
:CIN Cincinnati 2.2
:CLE Cleveland 2.1
:KC Kansas City 2.0
:IND Indianapolis 1.7
:CAR Charlotte 1.7
:TEN Nashville 1.6
:JAC Jacksonville 1.3
:NO New Orleans 1.1
:BUF Buffalo 1.1
:GB Green Bay 0.3 (112 miles north of Milwaukee 1.5 M)

Del Rio is a good defensive coach which is where he should stay IMO....not so good at the head coach.

Somewhere, Al Davis is smiling...he milked billions (literally) out of the taxpayers of Oakland, LA and Oakland (again).

The Rams have sucked St. Louis dry, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see them return to LA. And of course, the Jacksonville Jaguars keep complaining about the travails of being in the NFL’s smallest market, etc.

I’m continually amazed at cities that give pro sports owners a veritable license to print money (through stadium deals, tax breaks and other advantages), then complain when they don’t share in the revenue bonanza.

In the words of Mr. Gump, “Stupid is as stupid does.”

One more thought: if I were betting on the most likely NFL team to decamp for LA, my money would be on the Lions. Playing in a bankrupt city with dismal economic prospects is not exactly a recipe for success. But then again, the Lions are owned by a member of the Ford family, so they’ll probably stay in Detroit until he passes on.

Detroit may be broke, but their suburbs are some of the most affluent in the country.

Same mental deficiency as Liberals possess. If it sounds good, then it MUST work... nay, must be FORCED... no matter how many times it has actually failed in reality.

Yes, emphasis on WERE. Past tense. For, like, 53 years. (As long as I’ve been walking the earth)
