New Doctor Who star to be unveiled
BBC News ^ | 2nd August 2013 | BBC News

'The new star of Doctor Who will be revealed in a special live programme on Sunday, the BBC has announced.

The half-hour show, presented by Zoe Ball, will feature an interview with the new lead, as well as 11th Doctor Matt Smith and executive producer Steven Moffat.

"The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who's taking over the Tardis," Moffat said.

"For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve."

Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor, is on BBC One at 7pm on 4 August.

According to the official announcement, Ball "will unveil the 12th Doctor in the first ever interview in front of a live studio audience set against the backdrop of a swirling vortex, amongst Daleks and the Tardis".

Smith, who has played the Time Lord since 2010, announced in June that he would be bowing out in this year's Christmas special.

The announcement sparked much speculation about who might take over, with Peter Capaldi, Ben Daniels, Rory Kinnear and Ben Whishaw.'

I’m hoping that Rowan Atkinson makes a comeback.

If you can find a bookstore take a look at what they call the Science Fiction section. It’s mostly fantasy. The Syfy channel is reflecting mix along with cheap to produce reality shows (all those stupid ghost shows and make up shows) coupled with cheap to produce made for Tv movies like Sharknado.

Personally I would like to see them do the Honor Harrington series or the Saga of the Seven Suns, The Looking Glass Wars or Hyperion/Rise of Hyperion for example.

Prince Charles is saddened that he doesn't have this gig either.

Didn’t work well with Jack or Janto in Tourchwood. Jack was bisexual who seemed to go more for men. Janito or however you spell his name was gay. The level of sexuality in Tourchwood made it somewhat uncomfortable to watch. I can’t imagine they want to test the Dr. Who brand with a gay. They might try a woman, but I don’t think so. Again he has always been male even in flashbacks to Galefry. If they want to have a female Doctor they’d probably do some flashbacks to periods before the first doctor to show him as one or have him discuss that gender is changeable. What would that do to the companion? Would it be male? If so how whimpy? If a women what then?

Tom Baker’s Doctor sometimes had multiple companions, male and female. (And it was Baker who first broached the idea of a female doctor by wishing his successor well, “whoever he or she may be”.)

I'd like them to re-run the old 50's and 60's SF along with the Japanese monster movies over the bump-in-the-night and mask-making shows.

Or maybe a make-remake series? The original followed by the remake. George Pal’s War of the Worlds, followed by Spielberg’s. Raymond Burr in Godzilla followed by Matthew Broderick...

I would like to see the George Gently detective (Chief Inspaector) series on BBC America. Additionally, there are great past series which would go over well in America.

I have to lift episodes from Youtube. I have a ritual mug of Earl Grey and some biscuits while watching A Touch Of Frost, or Morse, or Lewis, or Midsomer Murders, or Gently, or Sherlock Holmes The Early years. I tried watching the John Deed series, but the writers are sex obsessed and the main character is an avid repeat adulterer, bedding other men's wives. AMrtin Shaw is a great actor, but the John deed character was just too over the top immoral while the writers kept trying to commit societal engineering with him.

All the males have been beta males and one was a kid. The females have varied from subservient to insependent. Some haveoved from being mousey to almost but not quite an equal. But that has more to do with society. They also change the way we see the doctor.

Actors can say almost anything, but to have it accepted the audience and storyline need to be prepped. There was also a discussion about having a non British actor playing the role. That was vetoed. It wouldn’t be accepted.

While I like them they have been done to death. You can steam them on line, buy them for about $10. How many times can you watch Plan 9?

As for remaking them do you want tossed more Broderick style Gozillas? If they are going to fill up time that way I would rather watch Farscape, Babalyon 5 (and the ranger series) and Firefly.

Yes. Precisely. The modern takes will suffer from a side-by-side comparison.

Perhaps some will start to remember when America was a better place, where a man of faith has the courage to go up against death-ray trigger-happy martians armed with nothing but a Bible, when a frightened woman takes refuge in a Church, and her new friend (and doubtless future husband) knows exactly where to look for her. An America that literally thanks God in his infinite wisdom for putting bacteria on earth.

Perhaps some will yearn, will ache, for a better time, and find the will to make it happen.
