“I grow tomatoes in 1 or 2 gallon pots all the time,”

Is that a large enough pot for a tomato to grow big? Don’t they take a larger container than that for the roots?

"She’s got good taste!"

She's got good taste in men, I'll give you that. :{)

I haven't spoken to her in over three months.

We're not fighting, I just don't like to interrupt.

You need to start getting better, hon.

I may have to try weed blocker fabric because I simply can’t keep up with the weeds. I tried it years ago and didn’t particulary like it. I could never get enough rocks on it to keep it from blowing. I need so much of it and it’s really not in the budget.

Tip when weeding - put some duct tape around your first finger (or whichever finger you dig down to get the roots) to keep from ripping hang nails. Mine hurt all the time and don’t know why I didn’t think of it before, duh.

“What is the size of the planters that you have that need to roll outside or back inside?”

The big tomato container that holds two tomatoes has wheels on one end and a handle on the other so I can move that one.

The problem is the one tomato barrel used for one tomato or any plant that needs a trellis and I’ll use it for that special squash. Tomorrow, I’ll measure the diameter of the barrel and let you know. You don’t have to go to the trouble to do that unless it doesn’t take up much of your time and you don’t mind doing it. You could bring the dolly and see the small space I have for a garden.

I got an ice tea maker this past week so you can have good cold tea from the fridge. I also have a fresh lemon cake so you could have a piece of that. Are those enough bribes to get you to do it? :o)

Yep. I did an experiment...
Very interesting. I could try that with lettuce right now actually... (or maybe in a couple of weeks; we're in Illinois)...

The only way to beat the heat is to get out to the garden at the crack of dawn. Otherwise you turn into a dripping swamp monster. I have brought a fan to sit beside the desk when I come in. It’s become my best friend these days.

If you lived closer, I’d send the slobber buckets over. The small one chases possums like nobody’s business. They had something cornered by the shed last night. Hubby went out to check but couldn’t get back there to see what it was. It better not have been one of the cats I’m feeding. I think they know better than to get into the yard so figure it was a coon or a possum.

My husband is very excited about putting in a raised garden this fall for next spring. He’s got it all planned out - and bragging at me already about how many hundreds of pounds of everything he will grow and won’t have to pull a weed. :)

That’s fine.

I’ll stick to my plan of regular old gardening. I get satisfaction from it, and weeds. I’m kind of old fashioned that way. It’s not very predictable, but I sure remember the lessons, and enjoy my attempt to be a “real”, LOL, gardener. That’s why I didn’t use weed block before, I felt a little like I was cheating. Now I am sold on the stuff.

It’s not a fabric,it’s a roll of brown organic paper, and will melt away into the ground in winter.

Truth: That isn't going to happen.

I have brought a fan to sit beside the desk when I come in. It’s become my best friend these days.

I have a big all weather, on a stand, outdoor fan. It is so hot here, even with that big fan, I can't stand it. Inside, there is a ceiling fan close to my chair and anytime I go out, I'm under that fan when I come in.

Yikes, I found some in a search for $90. How slippery is it to walk on? Hubby told me I could use an old tarp but it’s plastic and it’s slippery when wet. I need to get my toes in the dirt for traction. Don’t know why I bother putting on shoes because they get kicked off after about three steps inside the gate.

Sounds great, I would use it if I needed it. Watch out about those raised beds, they can grow on you.

My first year and first bed, Hubby just humored me while he built the forms. Laughed and poked fun at the whole thing every step of the way.

After eating some of my corn, tomatoes, green beans, and melons, he was laughing out the other side if you know what I mean. He volunteered to build some more beds.

A year later he converted his regular garden into a raised row type garden with liners between rows, but not Mel’s mix. This year he converted 2 more. LOL

Ha, I know. I don’t sleep well so am up early but I still have to talk myself into getting out there. Of course, I’m happy once I’m out the door but it’s the getting there that’s the problem. All it takes for the slobber buckets to get out there is to say, “It’s time to go to the garden” and poof, they’re there.

Good days and bad days, but I am following the Dr. directions. He said I am a mystery with regards to my blood condition, but at least he didn’t come back at me with some awful disease, so I am very thankful and a contrite little patient.

The weed blocker I tried was actually paper, organic bio-degradable, brown paper. It’s on a roll that says “weed fabric”, which I find odd. 3ft. wide, total of 75 sq ft. $10. at Lowes, made by Greenscapes.

I cut it to the size and shapes I needed, then laid it down. It helped to have some damp pine shavings or clean sawdust - I put that along the edges to hold the paper in place, then wet it. Then I put sawdust/shavings up the center too where I had the wider spaces between my double rows. The paper will tear easily (when walked on) if the ground beneath isn’t fairly smooth and free of rocks. Especially when wet. That’s why I used the shavings and sawdust on the center - I can walk on it and it prevents the paper from tearing. Not a single weed has grown where I have it.

Sorry if I am rambling - still getting used to meds. Ugh.

Yep you could. Also a little later on You could choose a sheltered location, plant spinach, lettuce, carrots, onions, and garlic for a winter garden. Just cover it up with a row cover for the occasional frosts. Later double up the row cover and use straw if needed. You’ll be eating fresh stuff all winter, and around the first of March you’ll be eating carrots fully grown.

Well, many experts say no you need at least 5 gallons. The tomatoes I get don’t cover a whole slice of bread, but they are big enough for me to use in salads, salsa, tacos, and that half a sandwich I eat at lunch with soup.LOL

I have never tried to grow a big tomato like the mortgage lifter in pots. I like my tomatoes to be ones that I can just eat the whole thing with nothing left over.

Hubby likes the big ones, so he can just make one slice for the sandwich, then he sticks the rest in the refrigerator where it deteriorates rapidly and sometimes gets lost in the suffle.
