Love my Inspiron 17 and hubby has a 13. No problem with either. We have only had Dell since forever.

Oh, I thought it was “Deli Owners” which would have been far more interesting.

what ever you get, don’t scrimp on the hard drive capacity nor the RAM. I do a lot of Photoshop and my heard drive filled up very fast. It’s a lot easier to buy a PC / Apple with it all built in than to add it later. And less expensive too.

I own an XPS 15. I've had nothing but trouble with it -- 2 new motherboards and 3 new hard drives in one year. Customer service was passable (albeit all from India), but they flat out refused to replace the laptop or extend my warranty without a fee.

Maybe I got a lemon, but I won't be buying another dell.

Used to be opposed to Dell, especially laptops, but I’ve had two in a row. To me, the best selling feature is the service plans. I use mine long hours, seven days a week for fun, travel, etc. I pretty much replaced every component over a three year period and kept my last one going much longer. I usually replace every 2. Once I switched last month, I am going to try to reformat and reuse for business.

We’ve had six Dell computers, including two laptops and have been pleased with each one of them. Never had a problem that wasn’t from a nasty virus, which one of them died of.

I have a Dell i-7 laptop that I bought late last year. I am not real happy with it. It is heavy and has a glitch on the hard drive, so it won’t back up, etc.

I bought the Dell i-7 laptop to replace a Samsung i-7 laptop that died 1 month after the warranty expired. Local repair shop said it was the motherboard and Samsung did not have replacement motherboards for that model. So, it is an $800 door stop.

I replaced my crashed XP desktop with a Gateway i-5 desktop. I have not had any problems with it. Former, I had an ACER XP laptop that one of my nieces uses now. ACER bought Gateway several years ago.

My last three desktop PCs over the last 10-12 years were Dells ... all were bought refurbished from Dell.
The newest is less than a year old with Win 7 Pro and I also have a 5 y/o laptop. No complaints.
My only suggestion is to avoid Win 8 if possible.

I have no complaints — my last 3 work laptops have been Dells.

My only complaint is they are niggardly on the USB ports — make sure you get enough.

Mine is nearly 10 years old and I’ve replaced the power supply, hard drive and increased RAM. Its surprisingly easy and cheap. Its basically all components unless you cook your motherboard.

It may come as no surprise that the higher-end machines seem to be built more solidly.

The price per unit (RAM, hard disk space) of components/specs is so low that it’s ridiculous in a good way. With respect, the ‘I have a ‘55 Studebaker and it gets me from A to B so that’s good enough’ no longer has much validity, so cheap are processing and graphics power these days and as applications, web standards and data speeds increase slow hardware is simply not worth the trouble. A lot of computer can be had for under $1,000 and if your plan is to reset the odometer and keep the new computer for 5 years or more then scrimping now will only hasten its replacement.

As you probably know, Dell have rolled their standard warranty back on parts and labor to 1 year. Additional years can be purchased for a nominal fee and they are definitely worth it since failure of components (except for lemon hard drives etc.) will occur between years 2-3.

Delloutlet.com is an excellent resource. Many of these machines may have had a single bad component that was replaced - the rest of the machine is like new and can be had for a fraction of the original cost and a warranty is available.

They are heavy participants in NSA spying programs. Search for articles about Snowden’s job at Dell.

Considering how long you used your last one if you expect similar usefulness from your new one you should go with at least an I5 processor.

You can add RAM and upgrade the HD later but the processor, socket and board are basically non-upgradeable in most laptops.

Dell is one of the few ‘platform’ vendors who actually spec-out their components to make sure they work at similar throughput.
