An enormous mirror will be cast inside a scorching-hot furnace Saturday, marking a key milestone in the development of a future telescope that will collect more light than any instrument built to date.
The Giant Magellan Telescope mirror, the third of the seven primary mirrors planned for the observatory, will be 27 feet across and weigh 20 tons when complete.
...
Once cast and polished, these seven mirrors will be arranged to function as a single mirror 80 feet in diameter, giving the $700 million GMT a resolving power 10 times greater than that of NASA's famous Hubble Space Telescope once the new instrument is up and running in northern Chile in 2020

It's amazing how much atmospheric disturbance can be filtered out of modern terrestrial telescopes.
I wish them all the best on the glass cast. Those things don't always go as planned.

Perhaps this will be employed in a search for Obama’s birth certificate.

I was close to some astronomers at U of A back in the 70's. They have been doing this stuff for a long time and are world experts. I expect success. The facilities at Chile were being established when I was hanging around Stewart.

The adaptive optics are a great thing. Its so much easier and cheaper to send a guy with a ladder to fix them than launching him into space to do it.

I've seen a program on the facilities at Chile if that's the place where they add O2 to the lodging facility because the altitude is so high.
Neat stuff they are doing there.
Casting large glass pieces and annealing them is almost black magic. I've watched a program on that, too. Those guys rock.

But remember Levin said it doesn’t matter any more - to him that is.

Since we are playing for it, I hope some stupid government douche doesn’t drop the darn thing after all the time and trouble to cast and polish it.....because after extensive investigation no one will be responsible.
