Word For The Day, Thursday, August 29, 2013 – apheresis
dictionaries ad nauseam | 29 August 2013 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

apheresis (for 1: uh-FER-i-sis, for 2: af-uh-REE-sis) noun
1. The loss of one or more sounds or letters from the beginning of a word. For example, the change in pronunciation of knife from (k-nyf) to (nyf) or the omission of letters as in squire for esquire, or count for account.
2. A method in which blood is drawn from a donor, one or more blood components (such as plasma, platelets, or white blood cells) are removed, and the rest is returned to the donor by transfusion.

Example sentences:
"Williams gives the Narragansett word in full [poquauhock], though common usage reduced it and Anglicized it through apheresis [to quahog]."
--Ray Huling; Harvesting the Bay; Lyons Press; 2012.

"He had quartered in Memphis with Cynthia for weeks, giving over his stem cells through apheresis."
--Jan Karon; In the Company of Others; Viking; 2010.

Etymology:
From Latin aphaeresis, from Greek aphairesis (taking away), from aphairein (to take away), from apo- (away) + hairein (to take). Earliest documented use: 1550.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Apheresis

Apheresis is another name for taxation wherein the government says, “Your money is now Our money. If you ask about the “Y”, it’s because we can.”

This is the accent tile i found. it's marble and expensive, but even if $ were no object i think it would be too busy. I am thinking two rows of it and then just a textured cream stone of some sort above and below it. I showed the woman the pic on my phone of the light fixture and she agreed immediately that this is perfect.

We were eating out in Hershey a few weeks back, at the Chocolate Grill, and i guess they fancy themselves halfway between Philly and Pgh, bc they had some salad that had Pittsburgh in the name and it had steak on it, and french fries. I got it and it was good!

A+ for you, even though your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries. Now go away or I shall taunt a second time!

Yes, if they had salads like that in Michelle Obama’s school lunches, there would be a lot less complaining.

Animal control can loan you a humane trap. Bait it with a can of cat food.

I was just using an example of today’s word. Possum, opossum.

But thanks for the suggestions anyway.

diplomats are one problem. Asian drivers are another. Politically incorrect to say so, but true nonetheless.
