An entire generation has dismissed The Boss' music as lame "dad rock." Here's why they're all wrong
Every few weeks or so, Ill be talking to someone at a bar or club or house party, and the conversation will inevitably turn toward Bruce Springsteen. The exchange is usually as follows:
BAR PATRON/PARTY GUEST: So, what kind of music do you listen to?
ME: Oh, a little bit of everything blues, jazz, funk, Bruce Springsteen (brief pause) you know, my tastes are super eclectic.
BAR PATRON/PARTY GUEST: Um, why do you like Springsteen?
ME: So, you dont like Bruce Springsteen?
BAR PATRON/PARTY GUEST: Ugh. No.
(Long pause)
ME: (Shuffling away while muttering angrily, like an elderly woman being chastised for feeding pigeons) Well, you should.
This person will then enumerate the list of reasons why he dislikes Bruce Springsteen, usually employing four out of six of the following arguments:
Hes old. He sucks. He sucks because hes old. Hes old because he sucks. He sings about being a member of the working class even though hes made millions and millions of dollars over the past 30 years Born in the USA sucks. In my 24 years as a die-hard Bruce fan, I have had this conversation approximately eight or nine hundred thousand times. While the people on the other end tend to skew toward a specific demographic white, male, in a creative profession, dating someone with bangs and an Egon Schiele tattoo they come from a wide range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, from Bushwick installation artists to a bouncer I met in Ireland, who used his loathing for Born in the USA

I suspect he did that, because subconsciously he couldn’t stand to be happy.
I have varied opinions on BS. Politics like that other BS is in the toilet. We all here agree on that. My first impression when he broke big with Born to Run was tepid at best. He did not fade away however and has had a pretty impressive career. I went to one show of his in 1992 and enjoyed it. Will never go to another though. I like a bunch of his songs but in small doses. I could say the same about the other BS but never went to see her. Babs has a better voice than Brucie though.
I love Springsteen’s agricultural tax break because he has some bee hives.
Baxter fell into his second profession almost by accident. In the mid-1980s, Baxter's interest in music recording technology led him to wonder about hardware and software that was originally developed for military use, i.e. data-compression algorithms and large-capacity storage devices. As it happened, his next-door neighbor was a retired engineer who had worked on the Sidewinder missile program. This neighbor bought Baxter a subscription to Aviation Week magazine, provoking his interest in additional military-oriented publications and missile defense systems in particular. He became self-taught in this area, and at one point he wrote a five-page paper that proposed converting the ship-based anti-aircraft Aegis missile into a rudimentary missile defense system. He gave the paper to California Republican congressman Dana Rohrabacher, and his career as a defense consultant began.
Backed by several influential Capitol Hill lawmakers, Baxter received a series of classified security clearances. In 1995, Pennsylvania Republican congressman Curt Weldon, then the chairman of the House Military Research and Development Subcommittee, nominated Baxter to chair the Civilian Advisory Board for Ballistic Missile Defense.
I’m the same age as Springsteen, but basically I’ve only liked two of his songs: Born to Run and Dancing in the Dark. That’s it...two songs. Hated Born in the U.S.A. His other hit songs were unremarkable. I bought his Greatest Hits tape once just to see if I was missing something. I wasn’t. I played it once and then never again. He’s mostly just a mediocre talent who was overhyped by Rollingstone because he espoused the right i.e. liberal politics and jumped around the stage.
fan of the mighty Led Zeppelin here....the fawning over Bruce Sh*tstain was my initial introduction to the hypocrisy and bias of the press...
while the press was in orgasm over bruce sh*tsteen in the 70’s, Zeppelin walked the earth as the mightiest band in the world yet were constantly trashed by “music critics”....
i had a girlfriend who loved sh*tsteen....she took me to his concert in 1985...after the first three songs I thought “hey- i may be wrong”...but then i realized why i disliked his music soooo much; the fourth song sounded exactly like the fifth song which sounded exactly like the sixth song which sounded exactly like the seventh song, etc, etc, etc...then of course there was the preaching throughout the concert and a pathetic 25 minute version of the Beetles “twist and shout”....
despising this clown for his political beliefs came much later for me, but i always thought he was the most overrated rock and roll “artist” of the past 1000 years...
Me too back in the '70s.
His voice was irritating. He sung like he was constipated.
I hate his music because he is a leftist sleeze dork.
Bruce Springsteen passing a bowling ball.
Also, bear in mind that I have firsthand knowledge of Springsteen treat me and the soldiers in my unit like trash. If I wasn’t on my android typing this out, I would elaborate
Me too, I always hated his stupid screaming voice and his songs way before I started realizing I hate his idiotic liberal politics as well.
I hated BS the first time I was aware of him - c. 1971.
Not familiar with that group. However, The Amboy Dukes are a good band--and their name suggests that they hail from the Mosquito State.
I thought they were from Michigan.
At least Sinatra seemed to have a modicum of class. Springsteens' completely full of himself.
You’re right—Seems the Amboy Dukes are from Michigan, not Perth Amboy, NJ.
I just never "got it" with his fake working-class persona while doing everything to appeal to the high end celebrity crowd.
