We got “stuck” in Baltimore for a day last year, due to a storm that prevented our cruise ship from arriving on schedule. Rented a car and drove around, I have to say it looked FAR BETTER than I expected. Was shocked, frankly.

I am a Baltimorean, with deep roots here. I can pinpoint the rowhouses that my ancestors lived in during the nineteenth century. It was a very important city and port. I love its history.
Also I was a public health nurse going into these homes at the time of Johnson’s War on Poverty. Yes, there was poverty, but there were many more intact families and fathers with jobs before the so-called Great Society ruined life for the poor. The people left in these derelict neighborhoods are to be pitied. Everyone who has had the energy and drive to escape has done so. Our mayor entices illegal aliens to come here so her population stats will not look quite so dire.

My aunt and uncle lived in a nicely kept row house off of Edmonston Ave. in Catonsville for almost 50 years. It became a 2nd home to me in my misspent young adulthood. While it's been almost two decades since I last spent an evening there, I shudder to think of what has happened to the neighborhood since they passed away several years ago. What a loss in every measure.
