Vanity - FReepers thoughts on Odessa-Midland
n/a | Sept. 6 2013 | myself

Posted on 09/06/2013 6:21:36 AM PDT by urtax$@work

Seeking FReeper comments of living in Odessa-Midland. A relative (Texan by birth) may have a chance on relocating to Odessa Texas. The person is not in the oil bidness. but a professional in the Medical field.

I see where both together now have a pop of 200k+. I have never been there but always heard talk of all the roughnecks in Odessa.

The old story of oil owners living in Midland and the oil workers living in Odessa.

First hand info most welcome.

Great song....and SO true of West Texas. I can be on the overpass on Hwy 191 and Hwy 1788 (half way between the two towns) and see both Midland and Odessa’s lights at night, each 10 miles away.

Is the apt complex Trestles still there? Was on the east side still when I lived there.. It’s sounding like it is no longer on the edge (as a matter of fact.. I think it was actually close to the Midland County border).

Lived there until I was stalked by a young woman I had met online (was still BBSs at that time, so mostly local..)

Hey, fellow Odessan! Yes that complex is still there. There are many new apartments being built close to Hwy 191 and Fawdry Road. Big...expensive...ones! Lots of new housing projects on the east and on the west sides.

I am curious if the ‘google’ maps will be up to date..

lol, I remember the small caliche pit some of us neighbors would go to to party and keep the noise away from the complex (no drugs, I told them I would leave if I saw any.. was a deputy at that time) (was fenced off, but we went anyway ;)..

Also, heard they ditch Permian Mall_!?!? ouch.. (WinWood Mall was failing from long before because of the oil bust.. but Permian Mall was still ok when I left.)

Lots of good memories (and long walks ;))

You didn’t mention we get snow there every year! Snows for about 1-3 days.. and is gone after a day :p

True. A couple of years ago I flew from Midland to Phoenix during the December holidays. Weather was predicted to be nasty the night before so drove to Odessa and got a motel room. Got up the following morning to ice and snow encrusted truck. I-20 business to the airport was a sheet of ice and I tried to follow in whatever tracks there were. Airport was o.k. though TSA partly staffed. Took off late due to waiting in line for deicing. When I returned in a couple of days, maybe a just trace of snow and puddles remained.

You forgot to mention the BIGGEST jackrabbit (hare) in the world ;)
(and home of the jackolopes ;))

Why do we have a hockey team anyway?

Have you been to the Colosseum they call home? Lot's of trouble with the ice.

The team was named after the legendary Jackalope (note spelling) Not only is the Jackalope the worlds largest hare it has horns as well - antelope horns.

It still weirds me out sometimes. So much SKY - endless sky.

Sometimes it seems you could reach up and touch the stars at night. So much beauty at sunrise and sunset. Amazing cloud formations. I can actually see the satellites moving in the night sky. The sun rising looks like a big golden coin.

No way can I describe a West Texas sky properly.

Driving a hundred miles or better a day is our Texas way of life and it’s worth it.

. . .and we get to do it at 70-80 MPH!

You’re in my town!

I’m glad you mentioned the housing shortages around here. I think we are reaching critical mass.

I’m also seeing at least two fender benders (if not outright wrecks) on my way to and from work each morning.

I kid you not.

Permian Mall is still there. It is now “Music City Mall”.

Winwood Mall was razed and an HEB was put in its place along with various other small shops and a Target. I actually can’t remember how much land WInwood took up. Its been that long.

Howdy fellow Odessan!

No...it’s indescribable...it can only be seen to be believed. :)

I am seeing and hearing of soooo many wrecks. The OA said once that there were an average of 7 wrecks a day, and I believe it!

People drive like maniacs, especially on 42nd, JBS Parkway and on 191. My route and it’s pure terror some days. LOL!

I travel to work from East University all the way to FM 1936. It’s worse than a video game. People are driving like nuts!

Sigh. I should just retire and stay home.

LOL! 1936 has always been dangerous! I would retire but my hubby and I would drive each other nuts. :)

LOL! That's the truth with mine as well.

I used to work in Midland back in the 90’s. I usually took I20 almost to Garden City exit, but the speed would be too scary these days.

I sure don't envy you your drive. Be careful out there, neighbor.

Thank you! You, too!

I keep waiting for the people “in charge” to put together
a overpass impeachment protest in our area. They have a Facebook page
but nothing is ever really finalized! :)

That would be so cool! Hope when they do it, they choose a week-end.

On work-days we already have an abundance of drivers who can’t steer and look out the windshield at the same time, can you imagine what would happen if they see such a thing?

Double-take, Double-crash.
