"...to go into...and NOT find Bimbo products".

Sorry for the omission, guy.

I had never heard of Bimbo till we moved to Texas and I saw a Bimbo breads truck and trailer. I thought it was a joke at first. Turns out they own Mrs. Bairds, which I had also never heard of before coming here, but I had seen it in HEB. Bimbo also owns Sarah Lee and Earth Grains, which was the good stuff where we came from.

I check fig trees every morning and pick the ripe figs everyday, early morning. While I am doing the picking I am checking (squeeze test) the figs that may be ready for picking the next day. Figs will not ripen after being picked so I check by giving each fig a light squeeze if it gives a little I pick it. I don’t go by color for checking ripeness just the slight softness during the squeeze test. But color can be an indicator of which fig to test.

To me ants on a fig mean test it and pick it if it is ready! So far I have not had problems with hornets or birds.

You can store your figs in the fridge for about 2-3 days before using them. Or you can freeze them. The frozen ones are good for jam making as they get soft after defrosting.

You can also add, among others:
Entenmann’s (Goodies)
Oroweat
Roman Meal bread
Sun-Maid bread
Thomas’ (English muffins)
Boboli (pasta crusts)

We had an Oroweat “used bread store” (”day-old” outlet store) near us in Oregon that had nearly all the Bimbo brands represented in it that weren’t strictly regional. My parents lived in Mexico for several years, so Bimbo was a familiar name to me.

You could have sent some rain to TX.

No kidding. It is very dry here. Lake Travis fell another 1.5 inches today. That is a lot of water for a 62 mile long lake.

It’s scary thinking if we were still sending water to the rice farmers. Thank goodness they stopped that a few months ago. As of this morning:

Buchanan Dam is at 35.02% full.

Mansfield Dam is at 31.56% full.

The list is so long I didnt post it. We had a Sarah Lee/ Earth Grains store by us in the old town. Used bread for 3 or 4 for a dollar and fresh for 89cts. Hated leaving that behind when we moved. That store has since closed, couldn’t survive without us, I guess. :)

Greetings from Massachusetts-we have had a wonderful crop of little peppers, summer squash, basil, sage and cucumbers. We have some tomatoes that are finally beginning to ripen, and some eggplants that are doing fairly well. I hope that next year will be much better.

We usually grow jalapenos or small peppers. It varies every year, and we’ve always been very happy regardless of what we planted. I don’t think that we have had much luck with bell peppers, but it’s been more than twenty years since we made that effort.

I come from a family of seven siblings, and began washing dishes when I was about five. My husband and I didn’t have a dishwasher in our first house, where we lived for about eighteen years. In late 2002, we moved into this house, and I have had a dishwasher since then. I have the utmost sympathy for anyone without a dishwasher.

“I don’t think that we have had much luck with bell peppers”

In looking for sweet peppers today, I found small size sweet ones, sort of baby bell sweet ones that are good for containers. I’d like one that has a little heat to it and the rest sweet as in yellow and red ones. I think big bells are out.

I think that you're on the right track. Our best results have come from jalapenos and peppers that are smaller, and the smaller the better, although the smallest do tend to be hotter.

I love having peppers, basil, sage and eggplant just for their ornamental qualities alone. They're so beautiful.

The vine of eggplant reminds me of squash. Are eggplant plants the target of moths/borers? I want to stay away from plants that encourage those if I can.

Yeh dang Texas with its scorching dry high heat. My 2 volunteer slow growing Roma tomatoes nursing along with backyard semi-shade hoping to get them to late Sept when it cools down a bit and they get a 2nd wind so to speak. Got some arugula and black seeded simpson lettuce sprouts in the east window also waiting for a late Sept transplanting out back. The heat just about burned up my Serrano pepper plant but its still hanging on waiting for the cooler temps.
Scrooge this heat and drought more suitable for el diablo.

Thanks, I might have to check it out, but I still have soooo many left from this year. I have less than 200 sq feet for my heirlooms.

Hubby sometimes plants some of mine, but more often plants hybrids and such.
