LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Actresses Halle Berry and Jennifer Garner helped voice the support needed to pass a bill restricting paparazzi from capturing stars’ children.
The measure passed unanimously in the California Senate, making it so that anyone caught recording video or taking pictures of children without parental permission would face harassment charges.
Actor Jerry O’Connell, who’s a father to twin girls, said he’s thrilled the bill passed.
“Yeah, the paparazzi are really annoying. I try to just ignore them. I try not to say anything. I don’t want to make a big deal about it when my kids are there,” the “Burning Love” star said.
Berry and Garner have plead with state lawmakers for tougher laws to keep paparazzi away from their kids. Garner even got emotional at one of the hearings.
“I don’t want a gang of shouting, arguing, law-breaking photographers who camp out wherever we are all day every day to continue traumatizing my kids,” Garner said.
Senator Kevin de León introduced the bill after Christopher Dorner killed the daughter of a former LAPD captain.
Other celebrities who are parents have backed the bill as well.
Ohhhhh....they mean with cameras.
While I’m normally the last one to call for yet more legislation, if it takes another law to prevent kids from being shot, so be it!
It’s a law that should apply for all children, not just the children of Hollywood celebrities. It’s not the stars that exploit the children that are asking for privacy.
I love the hypocrisy when those who make their living in front of the cameras complain about those who make their living behind the cameras.
First Amendment violation. If those kids are out in public, anyone can photograph them. There is no bubble of privilege around them just because their parents are tin-plated glitterati.
This is so the stars can command big prices for pics of their darlins.
I was kinda thinkin’ the same. Go for the igno-parents instead. Kids are somewhat still trainable to a point. Just look at what a great job billy ray did. Oh, he didn’t?

I agree that celebrities shouldn’t get special treatment, but to demand parental consent for pictures taken in public that happen to include children is insane, and impossible to implement.
But that’s Kalifornia for you.

The power of the tax is the power to destroy.
One way to prevent this behavior would be to tax the sale of photographs from freelance photographers of other individuals, without their permission, at 75% sales tax.
This would change the market dynamics so that these gossip rags would hire the individuals or not do business with them. Thus if they hire them, the rag would be responsible for the actions of the photographers. This would then create a valuable target to go after in restraining orders and harassment lawsuits.
This might cause the Hollywood types to start spending more time with their kids, a sort of shield against the paparazzi. Yeah, I know that’s cynical.
One problem that we have today that didn’t exist 500 years ago, is that royalty are so plentiful and indistinguishable from us today, that we don’t always know when to avert out eyes and go into submissive pose.
