One of the things that America is bad at - disastrously bad, in fact - is seeing thousand-year old wars for what they are.

Syria was forcibly taken from Russia’s eternal enemy, the Turk, and Russia will protect her forever. Same with Serbia.

Understand the Ottoman Empire and its enemies, and you will understand much.
Understand the Hapsburg Empire, and you will understand the rest.

America says “Ottoman?? Hapsburg??? WTF????”

Putin wants to take down NATO. Since the days of Izzy, it has been east-west power struggles.

As far as I'm concerned, a NATO that will let an Obama use it to attack a country unassociated with its charter to install a Muslim government in a North African country is a NATO that doesn't have a reason to exist any more. Especially a NATO that can be so easily controlled by a Muslim pretender President for so preposterous a reason. Not a fluke, either, this understudy role as reports had Kerry/Obama considering a NATO redux in Syria at one point. Yes, Putin is a hard liner and he'd like to see NATO go. Truthfully, I don't care about EU - it is going to be Muslim in a generation anyway. Our real problem here in the US isn't Putin; it is Obama and the ultimate control he wants to obtain over our lives.

“on the verge of voting to arm Syrian rebels”

Where did THIS come from?

The vote is on a resolution of support for Obama to order U.S. military action against the Assad regime over its alleged use of chemical weapons.

As of this moment the vote has been postponed because of the sudden, proposed arrangement for international supervision of the chemical weapons.

I’m wondering if Putin and Obama met privately. Can you imagine what was said? I can.

I think PUtin looked Obama cooly in the eye and said,

PUTIN:Look, you and I both know that Assad had nothing to do with those chemical weapons. The UN is there to investigate his chemical weapons and the night before he releases them on his people? Nonsense. YOU and I both know the rebels got the weapons via the Saudis maybe the CIA who knows, that is not important. FAct is it was not Assad and you must know this.”

OBAMA: I don’t think you’ll be able to convince anyone of this and in fact, public opinion seems to agree that Assad was behind this.

PUTIN: Ok, let’s move on to what we both know is the issue. It’s not the gassing of innocent civilians. I have intelligence that indicates the rebels kidnapped these people the night before and gased them. It was staged.

OBAMA: NO one will believe this, and you can’t prove this to the public.

PUTIN: Perhaps not. You are very good at controlling your media. But let me be clear about this. YOu couldn’t care less about these children being gased, but the fact that they were serves your purpose. Much better than trying to get support for a few Christians being beheaded, churches burned etc. You know the world would not care about that.

OBAMA: (Listening intently)

PUTIN: You and I both know it’s about natural gas, and the Saudis pulling the strings here. Don’t you know that the Saudis offered us plenty if we’d stop our support for Assad? But what do I get in return? I control gas in Europe, why would I want Quatar to compete against me?

OBAMA: I will tell you that whatever means I have, I am committed to seeing Assad overthrown. We can talk all day long about the means. Whatever they are they justify the end for me. We will bomb Assad, and we will support the rebels.

PUTIN: Maybe you will maybe you won’t. You clearly have no support for this. But since you are clear with me, I will be clear with you. If you bomb Syrian airports, air force, communications, etc whatever, I will respond. I will take out one of your ships. You will have 300 American sailors at the bottom of the Mediterranean. I may lose soldiers too, but I am in this fully. You go after Assad, you go after me, and perhaps too the Chinese, and maybe we don’t even need to fire at you. Maybe we look at the US debt that we carry. Maybe we unload some of it. I think you should think twice before doing anything.

OBAMA: I guess we will see.

The Obama administration on Wednesday approved natural gas exports from a third U.S. facility, the second permit issued in about three months, triggering debate over whether the review of a long backlog of export applications is picking up steam.

August.2013

It is clear that natural gas is the bankroll supplier right now. Maybe we are just entering a global competition for customers. Putin is having to give up his former grip on his empire. Bulgaria was able to negotiate a 20% decrease in pricing with Gazprom recently I read.

I also read the market has been flooded by a glut from "unprecedented shale gas production in North America".

Now, this latest Onono fiasco might even put the kibosh to Hillary's ambitions (cackle).

The Democrats' 'Smart Power' Lies in Ruins
National Review | Sept 3, 2013 | Jim Geraghty / FR Posted by kristinn

Democrats Suddenly Realize What They Miscalculated About the World: Everything

As we await Congress’ decision on authorizing the use of U.S. military force in Syria, Democrats are suddenly realizing that their foreign policy brain-trust completely misjudged the world.

Being nicer to countries like Russia will not make them nicer to you. The United Nations is not an effective tool for resolving crises. Some foreign leaders are beyond persuasion and diplomacy. There is no “international community” ready to work together to solve problems, and there probably never will be.

You can pin this on Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Susan Rice, but most of all, the buck stops with the president. Those of us who scoffed a bit at a state senator ascending to the presidency within four years on a wave of media hype and adoration are not quite so shocked by this current mess.

We never bought into this notion that getting greater cooperation from our allies, and less hostility from our enemies, was just a matter of giving this crew the wheel and letting them practice, as Hillary Clinton arrogantly declared it, “smart power” (and fronted Time magazine cover).

(These people can’t even label a foreign policy approach without reminding us of how highly they think of themselves.)

They looked out at the world at the end of the Bush years, and didn’t see tough decisions, unsolvable problems, unstable institutions, restless populations, technology enabling the impulse to destabilize existing institutions, evil men hungry for more power, and difficult trade-offs.

No, our problems and challengers were just a matter of the previous hands running U.S. foreign policy not being smart enough. (Excerpt) Read more at nationalreview.com ...

I read yesterday that the Russian foreign minister called Kerry while Kerry was about two hours out over the Atlantic on his way to Europe. In that call, the FM told Kerry that Putin was working on the disarmament deal.

When Kerry became flustered in a news conference, he spouted out Russia’s plans.

Kerry thought of nothing. It was Russia’s idea.

Now, watch Hillary and Obama claim Kerry thought of it all along and say that Putin responded to Kerry’s brilliant idea
(a lie).

The dynamic here is Putin siding w/ Assad---who accepts Christians---against the Syrian rebels who are Muslims. The rebels want Assad out b/c he interferes w/ the Muzzie plan to destroy Christians.

Remember when Egyptian Gen al-Sisi defended Egyptian Christians against marauding Muslims.... al-Sisi also got backing from Russia's Putin......and China.

At the height of the Egyptian crisis, when vacationing Ohoho tried to call al-Sisi, the general refused to take his call---showing al-Sisi's determination not to let Ohoho interfere in his plan to drive Muslims out of Egyptian politics.

Al-Sisi's got the lay of the land---he and Putin know who's got the ear of our Muslim president.

Yeah. I think Putin is so so going to go the full monty on this because in his view, the future of Russia as a country depends on this moment in time.

And Russians are all about Mother Russia. In a different way than we are patriotic. Not to mention Putin is kind of a low level psychopath, like the ones that do extremely well as CEOs.

If we let these idiots bomb Syria, we are all facing WW3. Syrian sites are saying the rebels are plotting some very bad stuff for Israel while they wait for us to do the bombing.

In the dog training world there is a concept called stacking. It means every dog can and will bite under the right stressors, all piled together. Putin is so done with us after Serbia. If this were a first occasion of us being aggressive and really, violating international law, maybe it would walk. But after Serbia, Syria will tip us into the dark side with Putin.

Iran of course wouldn’t be alone in such a showdown, but they are the ones—if anyone—we should have gone after after 9/11.

As to the French, I believe that demonstrates the caliber of allies that Obama and Kerry are able to attract.
