You can ask Wes Loe a lot of things about his life in Hyder, Alaska, population 65. You can ask about the mail delivery (waiting for a letter is like waiting for the second coming of the Lord); about the black bears wandering through town (we all have guns); and about living in an Alaskan community that uses Canadian currency, has a B.C. area code (250), relies on B.C. hydro for its power and sends its children to the Bear Valley School in neighbouring Stewart, B.C., population 300.

What is this "letter" of which you speak?
That’s the MasterCard bill.
Everyone in town has a gun and they don’t have a police department.
Canuckistani coins used to be pretty common in this part of the country. We used to use them all the time and I never thought anything of it till I tried using one in Texas and the cashier asked me what the hell I was trying to pull.
Sounds like where I live now.
Just recently I discovered,to my surprise, that US quarters can be used in Montreal parking meters.Using them saved me the bother and expense of changing US currency.
I grew up and lived in Michigan for 45 years. My grandfather was Canadian so we went to see relatives frequently. In Windsor and Sarnia, it was common to accept American dollars. I went to a campground once just a few miles from the border. They had never taken US dollars before. I had to work out the exchange rate for them.
Funny thing about Hyder (well, among many) is that there is no US border station going INTO Hyder, AK from Canada. This is because you can’t go anywhere once you’re there. You can only drive 30 or so miles out to see the glaciers.
But there is a Canadian border station coming back into Canada from Hyder.
Where do they think you’ve been?
I wonder how they handle the cross-border gun situation? Bears don’t respect international boundaries.

That guy seriously looks like Ted Kennedy.
What a great View! Would be nice to visit but it might as well be on the moon.
