Utah Dad Wears Short Shorts To Teach Daughter About Modesty
NBC Bay Area ^ | Friday, Sep 13, 2013 | An Phung

A Utah dad made a "small" change to teach his daughter a big lesson about modesty.

Fed up with his daughter's love for short denim shorts, Scott Mackintosh, a father of seven from Salt Lake City, left the house for a family outing in a pair of very short shorts after the teenager refused to change into something more modest.

"I heard my wife ask our daughter if she would please change into some longer shorts before leaving. She said 'NO!'" MacKintosh wrote on his wife's blog. "Instead of turning her response and disrespectful attitude into a major battle, I decided to make a 'small' statement on how her short-shorts maybe aren’t as 'cute' as she thinks!"

MacKintosh took a pair of old jeans and cut them so short that the whites of the pockets were hanging out. At first, his daughter did not notice his new look. When she did, she played it off like she didn't care, he said.

The father talked to NBC's Mike Taibbi about his agenda behind the shorn jeans.

"I was absolutely going for shock value and a little bit of embarassment," he said in a segment that appeared on the Today show.

The embarrassment finally sank in when the family stopped for milkshakes and she refused to leave the car.

"We went in, but she stayed in the car. She had had enough and did not want to go through any further embarrassment," he wrote.

MacKintosh's wife and other kids, however, were not daunted by his fashion statement. Photos that they snapped went viral after they posted it online, prompting MacKintosh to write about the full story on his wife's blog.

I became a junkie to teach my daughter not to take drugs.

I guess the shorts these parents disapprove of just somehow magically appear in the girl’s closet.

I was wondering why they let her buy them. But maybe, like the father, she altered a pair of jeans.

My 10-12 y.o. daughter used to come to the dinner table in a top and panties.
My wife and I bitched at her about it, sent her to put on clothes. And the next night same thing.

I made an agreement with my wife and daughter’s older brothers.
Next time she came to the table in her panties. The rest of us got up went in the bedrooms and stripped down to our underwear. Walked back out and sat at the table.
Daughter took one look went and got dressed and never came to the table in her panties again.

My friend told me when he was a teenage his sister would walk around the house topless. Once, he was working in the garage with a buddy. He had just been in the house, and his sister was up to it again. The buddy asked if he could go in to use the bathroom, and my friend was about to say something, but then he said, “sure.” He waited a few seconds, her his sister scream, then she never did that again.

By fifteen I was supplementing wardrobe with babysitting money and a sewing machine. My mom bought me the basics, but I supplemented with stuff from the second hand stores and a few warehouse type places. I came up with all sorts of stuff my parents didn’t care for. For two years, I ran around in men’s boxer shorts all summer long.

Her ass would have been beat so bad that she couldn't sit. This says more about you and your wife than your daughter.

Neither of my kids ever said No to me when I corrected them. They knew better.

But you have to start when they are young.

Around our home when the three teenage daughters & one son came to the dinner table dressed inappropriately (girls in night wear or bathrobes, son wearing dirty jeans, etc.), no one made a move to alter our manner of dress, the inappropriately attired teen was merely sent away from the dinner table without eating(no sneaking food later or going out for fast food.)

A night without dinner wasn't the worst thing that ever happened to a teenager but it's darned near it!

I think the solution he came up with was perfect for a teenager. Embarrassment is a huge motivator with teens. She will NEVER forget that lesson.

One of the most disgusting meal time displays is a man in a “wife beater” undershirt - just plain gross.

I remember when my older sister came to the breakfast table wearing a micro mini. She was a sophomore in highschool. It was one of those dresses that came with the panties that matched. Anyway my dad looked at her and told her to “bend over.” She say.why? He said well if you are going to show it to everybody else you might as well show me first. She turned beet red and promptly went back upstairs and changed into something more appropriate.

By the way my dad would have never let her go to school dressed like that. I will never forget that.

I would agree with you if this father had not allowed the girl to own such apparel to begin with, much less wear it in public. I suspect, though, that he and his daughter are just trying to get their 15 minutes of fame.
