FULL TITLE: REVEALED: Gunman, 34, who murdered TWELVE and injured 15 in Washington Navy Yard rampage was decorated petty officer who left military in 2011 after previous gun charge

While the motive of Aaron Alexis, the heavily armed gunman who shot dead at least 12 people in cold blood this morning at the Washington Navy Yard has not been revealed, speculation is growing his dismissal from the U.S. Navy for 'misconduct' in January 2011 may have inspired him to commit a deadly revenge.

Alexis, 34, has been revealed to have a prior arrest for letting a gun off that could have harmed his neighbor while he cleaned his own weapon at home in Fort Worth, Texas, 2010.

Despite the lack of acknowledged motive, one U.S. official has been quoted as saying Alexis was kicked out of the Navy in 2011 for 'misconduct' as a direct result of his gun arrest three years ago.

Law enforcement said that Alexis' identity was confirmed by fingerprints and that he served in the U.S. Navy between May 5th, 2007 and January 31st, 2011, the date he was dismissed from the service.

He was awarded the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal prior to his discharge in January 2011.

A U.S. Navy spokesman said that Alexis was an 'aviation electrician's mate' - ranked as a third class petty officer and served at the Naval Air Station in Fort Worth, Texas.

He is reported to have enlisted in New York and the Brooklyn native graduated from boot camp at Great Lakes, Illinois as an Airman Recruit.

By any chance was his new name Mohammed Islam or is the propaganda machine once again playing “filter the news”?

“Decorated” you say? Those are both ribbons EVERYONE gets at the end of basic training, IIRC. If he’d had any commendation medals or higher, then I’d agree with the headline. The press know nearly nothing about the armed forces, because they’d never think of serving and probably don’t have any friends that did, either.

His “decorations” are the routine ones that everybody gets.

News is now reporting that he went to Thailand and converted to...Buddhism? But he had “anger issues”.

The headline doesn’t match the body of the article. The NDS and GWOT take a pulse and being present during the prescribed timeframe. I also wonder about his separation being due to an accidental discharge at his home. I am guessing there is more to that story.

I’d be interested in hearing of his views on race, religion and what he accomplished after being dumped from the military. “Decorated”...what a laugh.

I don’t say the article says so!

Charges were actually dropped in that case, I believe. He also was arrested (don’t recall the year) for shooting out the tires of a neighbor in Tacoma who annoyed him.

In any case, not a well-balanced guy.

Hadn’t heard about the tire incident, but I did hear someone say that one neighbor (a woman) was afraid of him
