Me too. I have a Springfield M1A SOCOM 16. Accurate and powerful.

If you rocked your hand backwards, over the reciever’s curved operating-rod handle, and let it release, you never got the dreaded Garand thumb. A CMP veteran showed me that little trick. Never had a bolt-imprint again.

I was shown that too by a veteran officer in my department. But only after I had tried to chamber My right thumb.

other than it's size(bigger), weight(heavier), materials(wood not plastic) and caliber(larger/more powerful), it doesn't defecate where it eats... ie the spent gas is not vented into the action like the M16 to make the rifle cycle

And besides the other replies, one additional advantage of the Garand is that it's solidly built enough that if you butt-stroke somebody across the face with it, you will break his face instead of breaking the rifle.

Bayonet also works better on a full-size rifle.

The M16 or rifles firing the 5.56 NATO or civilian .223 cartridge are moderate power, but many rifles hold 30 round magazines. They have low recoil and are easy to shoot so they are a good self-defense choice for people who are bothered by recoil or by a heavir=er rifle.

The M-14 or M1A or Garand fire 30 calober bullets that are about 3 times heavier than a .223 bullet. The M-14 and M1A fire the .308 or 7.62 NATO round while the Garand fires the 30-06 round. They are fairly similar with military loads. The Garand uses a 8-round clip that is inserted from the top and the clip is ejected when empty giving that "Ping" sound. The M-14 and M1A use standard 20-round magazines. I don't think the M1A or Garand recoil much, but definately more than a .223. If I knew I was going into a fight, my choice would be M1A.

Just one itty-bitty nit.

The 30-06 is 7.62X63.

The 7.62X54 you cited is the round for the Russian Mosin Nagant. (Yes - I’m a Mosin freak. Fireballs ‘R Us!)

MacArthur sure made a very wise decision by insisting that they stick to the 30-06 rather then going to the .276.

If my memory serves me correctly my late Leatherneck father told me that when he entered the Marines in WW2 there were insufficient Garands to go around and he trained with a Springfield.

Tell it to the Marines. The M1 does my talking, Mack. This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. Fix bayonets!

Was that comment meant to be a smart ass one or just sarcastic? It did nothing to answer her question.........
