"The story of the first semi-automatic rifle ever widely-adopted as a standard military arm began after the start of the First World War, when the inventor John C. Garand (Canadian, then living in USA) began to develop a semi-automatic (or self-loading) rifles.

He worked at the government-owned Springfield armory and during the 1920s and early 1930 developed a number of design. Early rifles were built using somewhat rare system of the cartridge primer blowback, but due to some reasons this system was unsuitable for a military rifle, so he switched to the more common gas-operated system. He filed a patent for his semiautomatic, gas operated, clip-fed rifle in 1930, and received an US patent for his design late in 1932."

So, how is the Garand different than an M-16?

Well, that doesn’t tell me anything. There are many rifles that use .30-06 ammunition. My daddy hunted deer with a Garand. A bit more detail would sure help.

The Garand fires the round on the left. The M-16 fires the one on the right.

Note thet the Garand is a semi-auto with an 8 round clip, fed into the top. The m-16 can be fired full auto or semi-auto and is magazine fed from the bottom (how many rounds? i dunno). Lighter weight, too!

A conversation about the M1 is one of the few time you will hear the word “clip” used properly for one.

Sorry.

The M1 is a battle rifle, full powered round (7.62x54 30.06) for longer range engagements.

The M-16 is a select fire rifle (assault rifle) that fires a mid-power load (5.56x45 or, nominally, .223) for high rate of fire at medium range.

The 30.06 is the standard for American big game rifles, the .223 is illegal for deer in most states.

Someone will pick a nit with all that no doubt.

Tell it to the Marines. The M1 does my talking, Mack. This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. Fix bayonets!

M1 pictured above evolved into the M14 which fires 7.62x51 or .308 in non military ammo. Civilian version is the M1A .

M16 replaced the M14 in the mid-sixties which fires 5.56x45 ammo .308 civilian. The two are completely different platforms.

Being a factory certified armorer on the mini 14 I am sympathetic. It is also the reason I have one thumbnail that is considerably thicker than the other.

M-16s are black and scary. Garands aren't.
