Penn State to regain scholarships

The NCAA said Tuesday that it will reduce the unprecedented sanctions against Penn State's football program by gradually restoring scholarships starting next season. Officials did not rule out future modifications, such as reducing the four-year postseason ban.

The announcement comes 14 months after NCAA president Mark Emmert levied the historic penalties in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. Penn State had faced a cap of 65 scholarships starting in 2014, but instead will have 75 scholarships in 2014, 80 in 2015 and the full allotment of 85 in 2016.

Put this right up there with the great work of Ted Cruz. We conservatives are having an incredibly great day. First the GOP is getting their just due from Ted and now a huge injustice to a fine institution is being rectified. God Bless the United States of America today! Justice is being served all over. Oh and Santorum for President 2016!

I don’t know about “injustice to a fine institution”. Jerry Sandusky, Graham Spanier and who knows how many others were guilty as sin IMO. That institution still has a LONG way to go to reform itself.

It was however an injustice to lay the punishment on a bunch of kids who had nothing to do with any of it. Glad to see that at least will be rectified.

The Mann still supported by the institution formerly run by a noted Scholar of Wife Swapping Studies (and instigator of such brilliances as "Cunt Fest").

Happy Valley --> Gay Valley.

Yes, forget all about those unimportant boys who got buggered because of that football program. We need to get our priorities straight! Who cares about some boys having their lives wrecked...we’re talking about football g*d damnit!

Nope. Didn’t forget that at all. The person responsible is in jail. Case closed!

This (imo - as I have stated repeatedly on this forum) was all scripted from the start, and bound to happen. Otherwise, there would be no George Mitchell involved.

Anyone who didn’t see this coming hasn’t been paying attention.

This is mere face saving on the part of the NCAA and the BOT since those sanctions were to expire in 5 years anyway.

This way they phase them out over those 5 years and appear gratuitious without having to deal with the reason for them in the first place.

The NCAA is facing a lawsuit they know they will lose. Blame the dead guy, peak oil, and global warming are hoaxes.

It’s still an acceptance of guilt (where none was warranted, imo). We need the Paterno/Lettermen lawsuit to get standing (ruling coming 10-29-13) to get to discovery.

Also, I still see no way (even though Kane insists it goes forward) that GS, GS, and TC see a courtroom. That would put Mike McQueary on the stand, and he would possibly be the worst witness in the history of justice.

Of course this was pre-arranged. It’s the only way for the b.o.t/erickson to get the alumni off their backs, and emmert didn’t write the sanctions anyway (erickson did) - what does he care? Anything that makes him look like less of a clown is a win for him.

But it happened on their campus. Look at NCAA suspensions, almost all of them include the phrase “lack of institutional control” which is why they punish the school for things they didn’t know their athletes were doing. You can’t get much less institutional control than what Sandusky did. The suspension is at least as clean as every other suspension the NCAA has handed down.

What exactly happened on Penn State’s campus? I don’t think you have a clue.

And how is that the fault of the football program?

Campus, property, training facility, take your pick. Splitting hairs on what the building was won’t unrape those children.

It was their “fault” because it was their building. Lack of institutional control. That’s the standard reason for schools getting punished by the NCAA.

You do realize that V2 (Mike McQueary victim) came forward and said nothing happened that night in the shower, correct?

You do realize that the lead prosecutor in the js case went on national television 3 weeks ago and said that there was zero evidence that Joe Paterno was involved in any sort of cover-up, correct?

There was (during the trial) testimony that included acts on campus, but none that were ever made known to anyone at Penn State. However a vast majority of testimony focused on off campus abuse - mostly at js’ home.

You need to stop judging 2001 actions by Penn State officials using facts known in 2011. That’s not how it works.

I never said anything about JoePa being involved in a cover up. Now you’re just grasping as BS. Bad things happened on their property, lack of institutional control.

Actually with the NCAA that’s EXACTLY how it works. Look at other recent school suspensions. It’s the NCAA way. It’s why the NCAA will probably be busted up soon. But within the NCAA the Penn State punishment is no different than any other.

The NCAA needs to get outta Indianapolis, Indiana.
