Chocolate - get it while you can!!

Posted on 09/25/2013 4:13:43 AM PDT by djf

Reports coming in of a very, very bad cocoa bean harvest in Africa, and many cocoa farmers abandoning it for more profitable crops.

I started researching it a bit after passing the Lindt bars at my local store - up to almost 5 dollars for the 75% cacao. Managed to snag four bars at a large outlet store for half that.

The articles I've read say you should expect dark chocolate to go up to six dollars a pound or more...

Hey, life is rough. But it's even worse without chocolate!

Isn’t there a few lines in Orwell’s “1984” about the chocolate rationing?

Last week, December 2013 cocoa “opened at $2,555 per tonne and closed the week at $2,601. You can see cocoa has moved up nicely since the July 1 open of $2,170. Looking at the data below from the ICCO we see forecast a supply deficit for 2012/2013. A few weeks ago the ICCO increased the size of the supply deficit from what was earlier forecast. On the monthly chart below you can see the price action during and after these periods of supply deficit,” reports Gary Kamen for Futures Magazine.

Although daily grindings have remained steady, data from the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) indicate cocoa supplies will be in deficit for the current crop year after running surpluses in three of the previous four crop years. Production will be 118,000 metric tons smaller than consumption in 2013-14, on top of a shortage of 98,000 tons this year, reports Isis Almeida for Bloomberg.

Sounds about right.

That’s why a one pound box of raisins these days has 14 ounces.
But the packaging is prettier, so it’s a bargain!

Obama is pleased to report more progress in the fight against racist food habits like chocolate being scarfed down by typical white people and crazy asscrackers.

Let them eat snow.

I used to eat a pound of chocolate a day for at least a decade. Dropped off somewhat after the truckloads were delivered liquid in tankers.

No problem ... just one more habit to slough off as I harden myself for the times that are to come. I'm changed from my "typical American diet" to drinking only purified water and green tea each day, and down from >2000 calories per day to about 1000 calories per day.

I can do without the 2 square inches of sugar-free dark choc I was allowing myself per day.

But, as I get leaner, I'm also gettin' meaner. I got no problem with that!

The clowns running the ICCO say this every harvest time. Maybe they’re right, maybe they’re bluffing.

It works out really, really well for their members if they’re bluffing the prices higher on a large harvest.

In the 60’s there was a book by Adam Smith (pseudo name) called “the money game”. One of the humerous chapters delt with outfitting a relative of a friend and sending him off to Africa to check on the cocoa crop. It was a hilarious read. The moral of the story was when dealing in commodities like cocoa one is pitting their knowledge and information against the likes of Hershey and Nestle.
