No LA Times excerpt. Just a link. --- I proudly hold NRA membership. I am not familiar with this NBC television show ("Under Wild Skies") nor its host, Tony Makris, who on the surface of it appears to have wantonly killed an elephant. Makris is said to be an NRA lobbyist and to have been instrumental in Charlton Heston's ascendancy in the NRA.

Makris owned an advertising firm that was making millions off of the NRA running up to, during, and after the NRA civil war twixt the Wayne LaPierre faction who picked Chuck (Moses) Heston to be their front man....and the Neal Knox HardCorps insurgency.

I always thought of Makris as of the same school as Tom Delay....brutal take no prisoner attack ads, demonization of opposition, etc. Except Makris’ sights were usually locked on the NRA insurgency rather than the anti-gunners.
His positioning of the NRA with Heston as it’s face were more steps in the NRA becoming the true sophisticated powerhouse it is now....as opposed to the smoking jacket gun club crew it was before.
Ironically, the first steps were Neal Knox and Harlan Carter’s Cincinnati Reforms of 1977 and then the founding of the ILA....of which Knox was the first ED.
As to the whining libs....they were probably munching on a MickyDee’s bacon cheese burgers while pontificating about a legally bagged elephant.
Makris is a PR guy.

I have been a Life Member of the NRA since 1986 and I’ve never shot an elephant. In fact I haven’t been hunting for anything since 1993. The last two times I went hunting was with an archery license. The NRA does not pre-screen its members. Like the Sierra Club you send them some cashola and you’re a member.
He was the California game commissioner, and he (legally) hunted a cougar in Idaho...and lost his job as a result. Politically correct idiocy of the highest order.
I wasn’t ever saying there was any wrong doing.
If you read my post, you will see I sought to make it clear that I have not been following this issue at all and I was going on only what was alleged by the liberal friend of Amagi. I specifically questioned if the report was wrong, if there were more details not being reported.
I’m glad to hear from you that you have evidence that there was more to the story, that Makris did not poach - hence, Amagi does not need to condemn Makris at the behest of his liberal friend. I did suspect that that was the case, but did not know that. I also do not have time to research this myself.
Was simply offering my two cents as a means to think through the problem which Amagi posed.

I am a long time NRA member and not a hunter and have no desire to hunt, but if you watch the interview you will see that Tony Makris defends and explains his position, which I agree with.
However media matters and the rest of the Obama media does not want you to see this video interview.

Turn breeding elephants loose in California, and pass a law for life imprisonment for anyone harming or harassing any elephant in any way. That will eventually solve the animal worship problem.
I once visited an American who owned a million acre ranch in Kenya. He had his own private group of anti-poaching game wardens. As a result, his elephant and rhino populations had grown too large for the range to support.
He offered the surplus animals to the Kenya Wildlife department which replied, “We could not keep them safe from poachers, you keep them.”
At some point, most well managed herds need thinning. Even Bambi-loving suburbanites are now becoming concerned about the damage done to expensive landscaping by browsing deer.

That matters not, to most everyone. People tend to follow their moral compass regardless of law. And opinions follow like drunken dwarves.
In my personal opinion, for whatever the hell that's worth, shooting an elephant is like going into a pasture and shooting a cow. What on earth would possess you to do such a thing ?

Your friend is just another over excitable “useful” person for the left that is all. Legal hunt, taken ethically and best of all that makes hunters morally superior to anti-hunters that hunters and hunting ensure a future for elephants. Anti-hunting is just another cult that takes impressionable people and abuses their emotions, totally unethical and immoral.
I’ve been to the African bush myself a couple of times. I’ve encountered the beasts in Rhodesia and Zambia, and seeing them en famille, it’d be like shooting your neighbor’s BIG dog. I realize that the herds must be culled but there’s no way I could do it. Forty some years later I STILL feel guilty for buying an elephant skin wallet on Tu Do street in Saigon.
