"The Dog Stars"
9/29/13

Posted on 09/29/2013 10:25:10 AM PDT by pabianice

This is only the third time in nine years I have posted about a book. I have no relationship with either the author or the publisher.

"The Dog Stars," by Peter Heller, is spectacular. It tells the tale of Hig, one of the few survivors of a pandemic that occurred in the 2020s, killing over 99% of the worlds's population. He survives at a rural airport with his trusty Cessna 182, his dog Jasper, and a character named Bangley, who will not talk about his background but shows-up one day with a trailer full of weapons and ammunition. Hig takes routine flights over the area, watching for homicidal intruders in his part of Colorado. Bangley quickly and efficiently dispatches any trespassers. The writing style is spare but the narrative moves seamlessly between quiet anxiety and the immense, quick, brutality of survival. Then the story takes an unexpected twist.

I found it a real pager-turner for many reasons, among them a look at what real blood-and-bullets survival would mean. Highly recommended.

All right, I'll give it a try.

But if I don't like it, it's your ass.

Anybody named Henry Bowman in the story?

I read it when it came out. It is a good book. It reminded me of a boy and his do, although so many genre books utilize the same tropes so comparison is inevitable. Thoroughly enjoyed it and I felt like I got my money’s worth even though I bought it in hardcover.

I don’t think there is a “Henry Bowman” in America.

Just finished the read. It was a good read, and I too would pass on my recommendations.

Karty - This book should make your weekly prepper update posting.

Thanks for sharing pab
