11 Geniusly Ghetto Car Repairs

"There's a difference between a ghetto car repair and a geniusly ghetto car repair.

With a ghetto car repair, there's no passion, no creativity. It's like using duct tape to reattach a bumper or putting saran wrap over a broken window.

A geniusly ghetto car repair is different. It's an artistic approach to avoiding paying for a car repair or upgrade. It's finding a solution to an automotive problem using stuff from around the house. The results aren't elegant but they're clever. It's MacGyver meets Rube Goldberg meets People of Walmart.

I picked 11 of my favorite photos that fall under the geniusly ghetto auto repair umbrella. Definitely do try these at home... 1.Front headlight. Wiper blades. Manual lock. Air conditioner Heater....."

...GPS. Unless he's planning to take a long, long, long trip... and ford a hell of a lot of bodies of water ... I'm not sure this is going to give him the directions he really needs.;

Turn signal. Does a dog looking to the left count as a turn signal?;

Guy I worked with (not a ghetto type) decades ago had the first ghetto repair I ever saw:

Trunk lock busted, so he just drilled and bolted on a gate hasp with padlock.

I know a guy that actually wanted to do the heater/fireplace thing in an old econoline van.

Asphyxiation did not bother him, but when I pointed out that he wanted to build it over the gas tank, he finally scrapped the plan LOL

The outer door lock and the AC window unit were awesome.

Ha! Got that beat. I repaired the headlights on my daughter’s car using nothing but a rolled up leather glove, one tennis ball, and an old doggy toy. No duct tape. Should have seen the look on the mechanic’s face during state inspection.

You can see at least half of these in your typical Wal-Mart parking lot.

There are more naysayers around than visionaries...partly for the reason you gave. Good judgement comes from experience...experience comes from bad judgement.

A guy I know fixed the rusted out frame of his pick up truck by welding a pole from a street sign to the frame. It was one of the thick flat poles with the round holes in it. He drove it for over a year like that.

Not unique. Did this in 1966 using a tennis ball container ...
... and a couple of hose clamps.

I once freed up a frozen door lock on my 1969 Cougar by peeing on it.

So, you are saying that necessity is the mother of invention? Good one. Copyright it.

Here's my all time favorite. It's a new vehicle produced by AfghaniMotorWerks...

As an international company, AMW is also making a mass transport/camper vehicle for Kenya ("The Obama"...very popular)...

I drove an Opel Kadet about 25 miles without a fuel pump once. Taped a 2-liter bottle of gas to the radio antenna, and ran a length of 1/4" fuel line from that to the carb.

Had to stop twice to disassemble it, use the fuel line to siphon gas out of the tank to refill the bottle, and then put it back together, but it got me home.

I’ve seen a couple of wood gassifiers mounted in the beds of pick-ups.
