1 in 10 dogs that the Humane Society of Broward County takes in is a pit bull or pit bull mix, Cherie Wachter says
Taking in thousands of animals each year, the Humane Society of Broward County sees a recurring theme when it comes to dogs. Pit bulls, or pit bull mixes, are brought in the most.
"I would say one in every 10 dogs is a pit bull or a pit bull mix," Cherie Wachter with the Humane Society of Broward County said.
The dogs are given up for many reasons, including because the breed is not allowed to live in a certain area or because they just grow too big and too strong. They also may be associated with fighting dogs. It's even illegal to own a pit bull in Miami-Dade County for this reason.
October is Pit Bull Awareness Month. The idea behind the title is to spread positive news about the breed.
"It's a big responsibility taking home a dog like this because you have to be an ambassador," Wachter said. "You have to promote the goodness in them."
Shout Out on 6: Would You Ever Have a Pit Bull as a Pet? Someone who does just that every day: Dahlia Canes, who owns two pit bulls.
"Just because a dog is born of a specific breed, does not make it inherently dangerous," Canes said. "Any dog can bite."
Wachter said every day should be Pit Bull Awareness Day because the breed is so misunderstood. Canes agreed.
"This breed has been killed needlessly because of misrepresentation," Canes said.

Something positive huh?
Well I suppose when a pitbull kills a human, they usually leave something left of the carcass for other living things and the buzzards.
The month should be February.
Pitbull Pride Awareness Month.
Maybe we can get a Pork Pride month the next time Ramalamadingdong comes around.
My pit bull is the biggest cuddlebug you could ever meet. Just don’t take a swing at me or my wife and you’ll be fine.
We have two now, both inherited from neighbors, one wide glide like the ones they call English pit bulls, and another that looks like an American pit bull, complete with the patch over one eye. Both of them are good natured towards other dogs and people. The one with the patch around his eye spends his days romping with my wife’s mini chihuahua, and the other one is good company.
My friend Doug’s American Staff seemed a wonderful dog. Doug would tell her, “JB is coming.” As soon as I walked in, Daisy would flop over on her back for a tummy rub. Doug came home from softball practice one day, and was standing in the living room, talking on the phone. Daisy attacked him. Latched onto his thigh. He was able to kill her with his aluminum bat. The guy he was on the phone with called 911 as soon as he heard Doug screaming. Saved Doug’s life. The emergency guys said he would have bled out in another minute or so. 84 stitches. Daisy was loved and pampered. She never showed any sign of even the slightest aggressive tendencies. Good luck with your Pittbulls folks!
Seems like Daisy was a “B itch”.
Good but, unfortunate ending.
Sorry pal, I’ve been around dogs all my life, 60 years, and I’ve had means ones, and ones I didn’t trust. Neither of these two pit bulls are ever going to pull a surprise act of violence on anyone. It happens, with pit bulls and other breeds, and I appreciate your concern, but you needn’t worry in my case. I will enjoy both of these dogs, and my other two.
Justice for Puppy Doe!
People love their pit bulls for the same reasons that the black community loves its thugs.
Do you have one???
Yes, we currently have a 5 year old female rescue and have owned four others over the decades. Never a problem, always compatible with people and other dogs. See post #5.
Why pit bulls over other dogs???
<>My pit bull is the biggest cuddlebug you could ever meet. Just dont take a swing at me or my wife and youll be fine.<>
You just proved my point. You have a deadly weapon for a pet and you know it. You’re just thinking that it will never turn on you, just like the black community doesn’t think their thugs will turn on them.
Here just today:
Mother trying to save daughter, 3, from jaws of crazed family pit bull bitten 50 TIMES and left with horrific injuries that landed her in a coma
Her dog was loving and compatible too raised from a pup.
Any dog can lose it but when a pit bull does it has deadly consequences as you can clearly see.
And why is that???
If you have to ask that question, you probably wouldn’t understand the answer. Have a nice day.
