Before South Dakota State University fans flocked to Coughlin-Alumni Stadium for Saturdays homecoming game versus Southern Illinois, many spent the morning watching the Hobo Day Parade.
It's a tradition dating back to 1912, when men attending the school grew out their beards for the month of homecoming and the students dressed like hobos for the football game. It became a success and the tradition has been taking place ever since. This year, the parade started at 9:30 a.m., and lasted about an hour.
Onlookers, the marching band, and even the floats were covered in yellow and blue. They lined the streets of Medary Avenue to Main Street, cheering and chanting for the Jackrabbits. Local businesses, athletes and school organizations were just a few to show their school spirit in the parade.
Nowadays, most schools have a Homo Day Parade....
Was Hobo Carl there?
Things keep going the way they are under Obozo and Hobo Day won’t be funny. It’ll be life as good as it gets.
The school should be shut down, this is insensitive, heartless, cruel and above all racist...this is after-all Amerika...
My thoughts exactly. I’m sure the Daily Kos is going to pick up the ball and run with it. A campaign of public condemnation of the school is sure to follow. They will be stripped of their victories and banned from bowl appearances until the end this despicable tradition. This is probably the school’s last Hobo Day.
Count me out! I’m hobophobic!
I don’t see much difference between the ‘hobo’ dress and how students normally dress for cool weather. Flannel shirts and torn jeans are pretty much the style these days.
"GO, TEAM!"
