I don’t know why this is news. We have known for years that the Sumerians used clay balls containing tokens to keep track of business records, before they figured out it was easier to draw pictures of the tokens on a piece of clay; that is how writing was invented.

Thanks Berosus. One of the old buds on The Globe forum went into some detail about the accounting system change in Sumeria that led to full-blown writing for recordkeeping. :')
