Major issues with Java
self

Posted on 10/14/2013 1:27:23 PM PDT by Don W

Since last September's update, the Java in my mom's 'puter has not worked properly, and she is unable to go use her "Pogo" site.

I have tried using the MS uninstaller, and the Oracle site's uninstaller with no success. The folks at Staples went through the programs line by line and removed Java that way, but that only lasted a week, and the problem came back.

No further Java updates have been able to install themselves, and she is stuck with a non-functioning Java v7.7

Help, if you can. Snide apple and linux comments will be ignored

I can’t use Pogo on Firefox, but it seems to work fine so far using Opera. The problems seem to be a combination of Firefox, adblock plus and noscript not playing nicely with Pogo’s programming/ads.

Question:

If you go to My Computer / C-drive / program files , is there a Java folder there?

Windows Vista and IE 9.0.8112.16421, update 9.0.21KB2879017

You could try installing Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. Then install Java into the new browser and attempt to use the site that needs it.

Also, check this Pogo help page, if you haven't already.

Try the Revo Uninstaller. It’s an awesome program.

Are snide Java comments OK? if so, write once, test everywhere: a steaming POS, that was worth what is cost until Oracle started charging OEM’s to use it.

But seriously, your machine might be so screwed up that I would take the risk of using the registry editor and remove any trace of “sun.” or “java”

That is what I do when things get 'clogged.'

Prior to that, I would delete the java folders under Program Files (x86), Program Data\Sun, Users\All Users\Sun.

Then, run a registry cleaner. Reboot. Try installing.

No java icon anywhere except in the install/uninstall folder.

Backup any personal files on the computer.
Reformat the hard disk.
Reinstall a clean OS.
Reinstall Java,
Create a restore point.
Get your POGO working by installing what you need.
Create a restore point.
Reinstall other apps one at a time creating a restore point after each successful install.
Reinstall personal files.
Most likely the Windoze registry is corrupt and there is a conflict between Java and another app.
PITA but unless you want to go mucking around in the registry, brute force is much easier.

I use the GEEK uninstaller. Here is the web page: GEEK Uninstaller GeekUninstaller with Forced Removal.

The Forced Removal really works and removes all the crap in the register too.

After removing and then re-installing Java, this worked for me. I was informed that update(?) 25 was the problem. The current update is no. 40.

Update:

The geekuninstaller zip file was ID’d as photos by mom’s ‘puter, so I went with the Revo-uninstaller, and at long last Java 7.0.7 and all its hidden files are OUT!

I am going to run registry cleaner and defrag, then I am going to the Oracle website to download the latest version of Java, and I’ll get back to you all when I’m done.

Many thanks for all your help so far. I LOVE this place!

FWIW, there's JAVA for those OSes, too. It sucks there as well.

Thank you for your help. After using the revo uninstaller, cleaning the registry (306 messes in there), defragging the drive (7 hours and 2 false starts), and installing a clean version 7.0.40 from the Oracle site, mom is back in business!

Look out all you Pogo players, she’s ba-ack. LOL

Excellent news.

Now, learn about disk/partition imaging. It can save you hours of recovery time.

In Win7, check
Control Panel\System and Security\Backup and Restore

Also, check out ‘free for home use’ imaging programs. I recently tried Macrium Reflect and like it.

I recently had to put a new blank hard drive in my laptop. By using the manufacturer’s image restore disk to get the Operating System running and then using an image of my previous OS drive with programs, I got the new disk up and running in less than 2 hours. I didn’t have much tweaking and only had to add new program installations.

Note: I keep my data on a separate partition and backed up to an external hard drive, so it was recoverable.

Oh I’m so happy for you and your mother. I know that my hubby was very grumpy/frustrated when he couldn’t play his favorite games. It was how he passed the morning while listening to his favorite sports radio show. We live in an area where we can only get radio in two places....our cars or his ‘man’ room.

But THAT’S another story.
