Here's Why Vermont Has the Highest Rate of Illicit Drug Use in America
Yahoo Finance ^ | 10/14/2013 | Pamela Engel

Posted on 10/14/2013 1:50:35 PM PDT by Jimmy4Toes

Vermont has the highest rate of illicit drug use in the country with 15% of people saying they've used within the past month (compared to 4.2% in Utah, where illicit drug use is the lowest), according to 2010-2011 surveys from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The Northeastern state ranked high for almost every type of drug, from marijuana to cocaine.

This trend is a consequence of factors including weather, politics, and proximity to big cities, according to Barbara Cimaglio, the Vermont Department of Health's deputy commissioner for alcohol and drug abuse programs.

"You have everything from the colder climate, which tends to be a reason some people give, to more liberal attitudes, to higher income levels, to people having more access, but I don't think anyone knows for sure," Barbara Cimaglio told Business Insider.

If my US senators were Bernie Saunders and Leaky Leahy, I’d probably be stoned most of the time...

Actually it seems most Americans are high on something.. not all but most...
Not necessarily drugs.. but drugged on something..

If you elected Barry Half-White twice you’re quite delusional.. probably a Mad Hatter..
You know.... celebrating yur Happy UN-Birthday..

“If my US senators were Bernie Saunders and Leaky Leahy, I’d probably be stoned most of the time...”

With respect, I think you have that backwards. The rampant drug use more than explains the election of these two idiots.

You should update your 2008 Oklahoma map and show Red as 'Palin and whatisname', or something. Otherwise it is a bit embarrassing.

Ping to FReeper stalwart Jeff Head for the suggestion. The map was linked from his site.

The posting was not intended to endorse McShame in any way, shape or form. Instead, it was a study in contrast between two very different states -- one, liberty-loving Oklahoma, rejecting the evil tyranny of Hussein and the other, drug-dazed Vermont, embracing communism.

I would be doing drugs if I had 11 and 1/2 months of snow a year and was surrounded by Democrats

Higher income levels in Vermont? REALLY? I hated the place when i lived there, it was like poverty-town, everyone worked for minimum it seemed, and there was really no hope of a decent paycheck to be found in the state unless you were a high-tech import in Burlington.

Vermont is just barely above the national average. Certainly not "higher income". I'd say almost all of the higher paid folks are government workers of all kinds with a few at IBM as well.

Stupid useless article.

The headline says “Here’s why...” but the article doesn’t tell us why. The best it can do is: “ but I don’t think anyone knows for sure”

Here’s why: more people use drugs because more people use drugs. That makes as much sense as the article.

Wealthy, childless “back to nature” hippie retiree baby boomers.

VT is a state in a death spiral, there are now more people age 65+ than there are school age kids, there are more deaths than live births. There is no future after high school for the few remaining kids in the state as the watermelon socialists have regulated industrial, commercial and most agricultural activity out of the state.

But man, do they have some great microbreweries and grow ops.

There are pockets of the state like that. Franklin County, the Northeast Kingdom and the islands on the other hand are just grinding poverty and lots of crime related to opiate abuse.

Oxy has been a plague on those areas of the state.

And yet they have the best gun laws in the country and one of the lowest violent crime rates.

I don’t believe this BS. Right off the bat I would say a state like New Mexico has a higher rate of drug use. They are close to the Mexican border with all the Mexican drug running operations.

Vermont is too far from Mexico and not enough money to have nations highest drug use

“I really gotta get out more. This is the opposite of my mistaken impression of VT.”

My first wife back in the 70’s was taking a vacation away from Vermont because her husband was on drugs. From my association with her, I gathered Vermont at that time was a drug haven.

(she was a wife, she was mine, but I was not married to her)

Maybe so, but Vermont is very close to another center of drug traffic into the US, the Rizzuto crime family of Montreal. They are the center of the drug trade for the La Cosa Nostra, you know the Wiseguys. I have seen stated that the Montreal Mob is the most powerful Mafioso in all of North America at this time, richer than the five families of NYC. If you read the Montreal press, it is like the roaring 20’s up there. Seems every other week some croaked nose gets whacked.

Thanks!! I never heard of that Montreal crime family but it could be a large factor in Vermont drug use
