LONGMONT -- Andrew Dickehage probably will think twice before deciding to walk to work again anytime soon.
Dickehage, 22, had been having car troubles, so at 5 a.m. Monday he was walking on North 73rd Street near Niwot Road on his way to work at CCI, on the IBM campus. That's when three coyotes attacked him.
Dickehage said he was walking along and heard a twig snap.
"I didn't think much of it," he said. "I thought it was probably a bunny."
Dickehage said he turned on his flashlight to see what made the noise when the largest of the three animals attacked.
The coyotes lunged at Dickehage, biting and scratching him has he continue along about a 70-yard stretch of road, Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman Jennifer Churchill said.
Dickehage said the larger coyote launched at him a second time after the initial attack. That's when he "crushed its head with my flashlight." The two smaller coyotes then started to attack.
"They were continuously jumping on me one after the other after the other," he said. "It was nonstop. It was so dark all I could see was the glimmer of their eyes."

The state's advice in the article seems somewhat insufficient:
"Churchill advised that people walking through areas where coyotes might be present "need to be aware of their surroundings" and might consider preparing themselves by carrying an air horn, a walking stick, deterrent spray or even a pocket full of rocks to throw at coyotes and scare them away if they approach."
In the case of this attack a pistol or a machete would have been more like what was necessary.
Yes, they are in most any city that has open space in or around it which are most cities.
That advice excludes the obvious and it should have listed it among the options, especially when a sitting Governor has dealt with the same problem during a morning run, while carrying his jogging pistol.
Niwot is on the state highway between Boulder, Colorado and Longmont, at the edge of Longmont. They used to be small towns, but these days they are just suburbs, with some open spaces between housing and a few farms still. Not particularly wild.
Coyotes in Florida have taken up their scavenging lifestyles in populated areas (aka cities). Vicious coordinated pack behavior, coyotes will readily attack a small dog being walked on a long leash. Local extension agents recommend walking small pets on short leashes these days. Coyotes are good jumpers too. A short 4ft fence will not keep them out of your yard.

I was in Longmont yesterday dealing with flood damage remediation in Lyons. The catastrophe has displaced a lot of animals... but the scavenger type animals have been having a buffet of washed up rotting fish and crayfish. You can see coon and coyote tracks in the mud everywhere.
We can hear them hunting at night from our house. Its a creepy noise they make.
As usual, something like this has to happen because the government doesn’t want to upset other Bunny Huggers by allowing 24/7 hunting with lights and electronic callers so that wouldn’t happen. This guy should have had a handgun along if in such country.
Yeah, really bad advice there, and... umm... a walking stick? What is this, Victorian England? We’ve all got federally subsidized mobility scooters now!
I see coyotes regularly and I chase them. Heh.
Wildlife Officers were unable to catch the third coyote, who fled at a high rate of speed while wearing a pair of ACME Atomic Powered Roller Skates.
I heard a spine-tingling howl in the pre dawn hours of deer season several years back. I never sleep in the woods Rip Van Winkle Style after that. It’s really strange I started getting white hair at 32.
I like to chase them with a 55gr from a 22-250, they can’t out run them.

They just need to reintroduce wolves to eat the coyotes. And then, they can introduce tigers to eat the wolves. And then they can introduce killer whales to eat the tigers.

Right. Sticks and rocks. Typical Boulder solution. Heaven forbid anyone carry a gun for protection in Boulder County. After all, guns are BAAAAAAAAAAAAD!
