What You Need to Know About Windows 8.1
How-To Geek ^ | today

Posted on 10/18/2013 7:49:57 AM PDT by McGruff

Windows 8.1 is available to everyone starting today, October 19. The latest version of Windows improves on Windows 8 in every way. It’s a big upgrade, whether you use the desktop or new touch-optimized interface.

The latest version of Windows has been dubbed “an apology” by some — it’s definitely more at home on a desktop PC than Windows 8 was. However, it also offers a more fleshed out and mature tablet experience.

See link for details.

I’m on XP and I’m comfortable with it (though I ReAlLy loved W98) ... how much of a surprise is 8 over XP ?

All I need to know about Windows 8.1 is the version number. MS never really gets it right until Service Pack #2, so I am still going to be waiting.

“I have to do Gate’s gift to us, the control/alt/delete and reboot.”

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Ctrl-Alt-Del came from an IBM geek, not Gates. ;-)

Do not do 8. Do 7 at the max, and even that will confuse you for a while.

Microsoft’s motto: Change simply for the sake of change with total disregard toward actual improvement simply so that we can make even more billions.

I thought that was Apple’s trademark.

MS isn’t the only software that changed for the sake of change.

Newer might be okay, except when the developers remove features or alter the functionality.

Over the years, I have dumped many a software program because the upgrade deleted some specialized features I specifically used that program for. Many of those same companies eventually went out of business.

I bought a laptop about a year ago and it had Windows 8. I never figured out how to use it. I just hit the window that let me use Internet Explorer. Anyway a couple of days ago when I turned on the laptop a bunch of those little windows were missing right in the middle of the whole thing. I have no idea what happened to them. Any clues?

My husband’s new computer came with windows 8. I just had to reload my “new” iphone because the on/off button was faulty and Verizon replaced it. I am NOT updating anything for at least a month. I am getting sick of all this tech crap and am thinking of throwing it all in the garbage!!

Thanx Laz ... I can’t find 7 for free and I’m told I can’t buy it either.

“MS isn’t the only software that changed for the sake of change.”

Yes, I know. The same problem has haunted me, too. That is why I keep older install versions of software.

I was simply complying with McGruff’s comment about “Let the Microsoft bashing begin”! ROFL

Anyone know if I should uninstall Classic Shell before loading 8.1?

I don't know about Classic Shell, but I had Start8 on both my computers and the 8.1 upgrade went without a hitch.
