Is it secure enough to leave “updates” disabled?

I turned off “updates” after it broke every file association for every MS Office application file I had and there were thousands of them.

doesn’t the free 8.1 update come with a start button??

Yes, but it doesn't perform quite the way we're used to. See here.

Windows 8.1 is available to everyone starting today, October 19.

Huh? Did I fall asleep?

Uh...daylight savings time.

I don't know where the How-To-Geek offices are located but if it is anywhere in the US, then DST has naught to do with it.

Unless you were being facetious. In which case...

Newegg is good to deal with, and they are so fast to deliver, it is scary.

Please evaluate using SeaMonkey instead of Firefox, if you don’t appreciate the upgrade insanity.

““I have to do Gate’s gift to us, the control/alt/delete and reboot.”

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Ctrl-Alt-Del came from an IBM geek, not Gates. ;-)”

True, but if not for Gates, very few of us would have known how to use this useful tool:

Yes, underneath little has changed in computing, business people do the same things they’ve done for decades with them. The one big change was going to graphical, from command line, and making the browser the front-end to every functional use.

Yet the developers keep churning out new releases for trite features. The create change for the sake of change. While someone productive is trying to use the tool the developers don’t even have a clue why rearranging the way the desktop functions is unwelcome.

I just had an awful Newegg experience, their support is abysmal. They shipped me a clearly used product, it took a fair bit of effort to get them to do a return/replacement with a new item. (I wanted it as a spare part on the shelf, I cannot accept used electronics for such a thing!) They agreed to replace it, and then later sent me a refund with no notice. Turns out they decided they did not carry that part any longer. Weird.

I won’t be using Newegg now if I find an alternative a Tigerdirect or one of many other suppliers.
