Food companies understand that Americans are increasingly interested in buying food that actually seems worth eating. We want food that's some degree of fresh, healthy, natural or otherwise of higher quality. It's for this reason that you see images of plump fruit decorating packages of cereal bars and the greenest broccoli you've ever laid eyes upon appearing on boxes of frozen dinners. At Burger King, you don't order a mere salad - it's a Chicken Caesar Garden Fresh Salad. Those chips aren't just cheese-flavored - they're Harvest Cheddar Sun Chips, with "harvest cheddar" an entirely meaningless term. Few companies have applied this appeal more literally than Papa John's, which for years has boasted "Better pizza. Better ingredients." Printed on every Papa John's pizza box is a little story: "When I founded Papa John's in 1984, my mission was to build a better pizza," says "Papa" John Schnatter. "I went the extra mile to ensure we used the highest quality ingredients available - like fresh, never frozen original dough, all-natural sauce, veggies sliced fresh daily and 100 percent real beef and pork. We think you'll taste the difference." After all, who wouldn't want fresher, better ingredients in their pizza? A great deal of the food we currently eat, both from the supermarket and at chain restaurants, is comprised of ingredients created as cheaply as possible (tomatoes chosen for their shipability, not flavor; chicken as bland as a pizza box because the bird only lived for 10 weeks and ate a monotonous diet) and highly processed additives, many of them not even technically edible...

This is why we rarely eat out. Homemade is so much tastier, healthier, and cheaper.
Any pizza purveyer that talks about “topping” isn’t really talking pizza.
OKAY! I am ordering from Pizza Hut from now on! Meanwhile, the country is burning down.
Not if you live in a big city with good restaurants.
Apparently this author is a big lib. She makes appearances on “Democracy Now!” and is a NY Times reporter.

We used to know that fast food cut corners in terms of fresh and healthy. What you got for your money was fast, cheap and - usually - pretty good-tasting. But today’s idiots expect to pay a few bucks for fresh, organic food and that is just not going to happen. If you want healthy, eat at home and save your dollars for fresh, high-quality food.
I live on the east coast and can easily find good-quality large size pizza for under 25 bucks. Where you live, Mr. Rude?
My husband is the fire inspector, which requires him to go into restaurant kitchens. We don’t eat out a lot because of that also. When we do we stick with Church Brew Works and other small, local bistros/pubs in Pittsburgh. Is that city big enough for you?
My son loves Papa Johns. I detest it. Almost any local pizza place beats the chains.

I’m not a fan, but if their food was so bad why is the company so successful? If you don’t like Papa Johns there are plenty of competitors.
The article is a “consumers are (simpleton) victims of corporate greed” rant. Maybe what we need is a “single-payer” government run one-size-fits-all pizza chain to protect consumers.

Food can be any two of these things.
With just a little effort one can make a basic good quality white bread dough. The recipe is easy. Spread it or roll it flat, use some decent red sauce, some real mozzarella, fresh mushrooms and garlic. Let it rise while the oven is reaching 450 degrees. Bake (on a pizza stone covered with a dusting of corn meal if you have one) for ten or fifteen minutes or until the obttom begins to brown and you have decent pizza.
Spend more time learning he to make dough, how to make your wn sauce, choose or make mozzarella and you can have great pizza.
