I certainly hope that these pictures were not taken during the government “shutdown” by some rogue tourists unlawfully “recreating”.

Back in the 70s before the Restricted Area limited altitude, I would routinely fly across the canyon a couple of thousand feet above the rim elevation, all times of the year.

It was beyond beautiful and ethereally awesome! Especially with snow.

Yeah yeah I know...me and my 182 were making noise.

In January at dusk on a day when the OAT was -20, there was no one down there to hear it. Just me and the deer.

Ellen Griswold: I honestly don’t think you’re going to find the Grand Canyon on this road.
Clark: Geez, it’s only the biggest damn hole in the world.
Aunt Edna: Clark, watch your language!
Clark: Make that the second biggest.

On the contrary, I have seen it like that before.

It is nice to see so much in pictures. But two years ago on our way back from Oregon we stopped to see it in person for the first time - and dang if it wasn’t socked in for the whole day. Standing right on the edge you couldn’t even tell it was there. So it remains, on the bucket list.

Within the Special Flight Rules area it’s not below 14,500 feet, which means you’ll need Oxygen.

There are three VFR transit corridors (Fossil Canyon, Dragon and Zuni Point) but the corridor floor is at 9,999 so it means you have to be above 10500 minimum for VFR flight and higher depending on direction of flight.

Thanks.

The canyon was my home for most of the 90’s.

I like living in Maine, but we miss the canyon.

Hardly worth going over at that altitude, what about Monument Valley?
I did go up to 10,000 a few years ago to watch a shuttle launch from just north of Sebastian.
85 on the ground and about froze my tousch off at 10,000.

Stunning! We’re hoping to get out there next year to see it firsthand, now that our girls are a little older. Thanks for the post!

Monument Valley is clean, can fly pretty much anywhere and it’s worth it

Back when I was building time I once flew through most of the canyons in Glen Canyon in a Cesspool One Filthy, way too low (but legal), was a blast!

The Southwest is soulful to fly over. The immensity and stupendousness is beyond belief!

First time caller Alex. It’s Debbie Downer. Actually, I HAVE seen it like that before... I saw it up close and personal when I stood upon the rim and again when I hiked down to the bottom and (obviously) back up to the top. Just the same, thanks for posting the link. The images are stunning and the soundtrack compliments the subject matter quite well. I’m in AZ., having just come off the Pacific Crest Trail, and missing the experience immensely. No fear. Believe it or not, you’ve given me my next hiking goal. Thanks again.

Great Pics, but Horseshoe Bend is not in the Grand Canyon. Nearby, but not in the park. It is just south of the dam in Page, Arizona.
