Bishop obeys govt order to remove Catholic school teaching on sinfulness of homosexual acts

The Catholic Diocese of Whitehorse has obeyed an order by the Yukon government to remove Church teaching on the sinfulness of homosexuality from its policy on pastoral care for same-sex attracted students in its publicly-funded Catholic schools. Critics have pointed out that even in the title of the new policy, the ‘truth’ has been removed.

The original policy contested by the government was called 'Living with Hope, Ministering by Love, Teaching in Truth.' The new policy title reads: ‘One Heart: Ministering by Love.’

The original policy, published in the spring of 2012, sparked opposition from media, homosexual activists, and some citizens in the town of 20,000 last spring because it expounded the Catechism’s teaching that homosexual acts are “gravely depraved” and the homosexual inclination is “objectively disordered.”

The controversy culminated in then-Minister of Education Scott Kent sending a letter to Whitehorse Bishop Gary Gordon in which he effectively told the bishop that Church teaching on homosexuality was barred from publicly-funded Catholic schools because it violates the equality provisions of Yukon law.

The new draft is facing criticism from faithful Catholics, because, while it stresses forcefully the Church’s teaching that homosexual persons should be treated with respect, it is completely silent about the immorality of homosexual activity.

The new policy does mention the call to chastity and points to the Catechism paragraphs dealing with homosexuality, but the policy emphasizes that Catholic schools should “value diversity,” and aim to offer an environment that is "safe, welcoming, inclusive and affirming of the uniqueness of each and every student."

The draft policy also says that the schools will promote “understanding and tolerance of sexual minorities,” and that they will use materials to present homosexual “writers, historians, scientists, artists, musicians, and spiritual leaders” as “positive role models.”

"There is not a shadow of right in the general government to intermeddle in religion. Its least interference with it would be a most flagrant usurpation."

The minister said the policy’s treatment of homosexuality violated the Ministry of Education’s Sexual orientation and gender identity policy and “may be in contradiction to the Human Rights Act and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.”

Good gravy Canada is one seriously effed up place.

I say this as a committed Protestant, that Bishop isn’t a Bishop.

"...from its policy on pastoral care for same-sex attracted students in its publicly-funded Catholic schools.

And there's the rub. When you take the government's money, you open to the door to the government dictating the rules. And, given the disparity between the Church's position on homosexuality, and a government with some of the most pro-gay laws in the western hemisphere, there's simply not a spoon long enough to safely sup with (so to speak).

I don't know what the rules are on privately-funded schools in the Yukon or Canada in general, but it seems it would be in these school's interest to start exploring that option, IMHO.

Let’s just rewind to the Founding. Say that instead of taxes and arms seizure, the King had sent a letter saying this.

“You, of the 13 Colonies, must now have all your churches educate children on the virtues of sodomy, by royal decree.”

What would the reaction have been? You tell me.

Exactly, but the Canadians will just take it, and so will most of this country today. TYRANNY.

It certainly is tyranny.

The US will soon follow.

Each priest, deacon, minister, reverend will have to make their choice...God or man.

Although I have nothing but a lifetime of experience and finely tuned common sense to support my opinion, this decision is “tell tale.” It indicates that perhaps the bishop doesn’t believe the Catholic teachings in question. What that indicates about the bishop I will leave to you.

This is not tyranny, this is religious cowardice.

The School is PUBLICLY FUNDED.

Yeah, a publicly funded school has to respond to the public, duh. Canada is a pro-gay nation, if you mooch off the taxpayers, you must obey to the taxpayers, the politicians they elect, and the bureaucrats these politicians appoint. Simple as that. The church leader was tested, and he chose government cheese over scripture.

This is no different than borrowing a car from a gay friend and being upset because he will not let you put a Defend Traditional Marriage bumper sticker on it. Even in an 100% orthodox Christian society, a Church institution has no business taking public money, that is how doctrine is corrupted.
